Young people often get a bad reputation. Too often, their kindness, loyalty and sense of community go unnoticed.
At YMCA The Haven, we’ve worked hard to create a safe space where young people can simply be themselves. A place where they belong, where they are accepted, and where they know they have people around them who care.
Not every young person who comes through our doors is loud or outgoing. Some may sit quietly, not always joining in conversations or activities, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t part of the community. Time and time again, they show up for one another when it matters most.
Recently, after a youth club session, one of our young people became involved in an altercation with an intoxicated adult on their way home. Without hesitation, the other young people who witnessed it, didn't hesitate and rallied around, supporting and looking out for their friend until the situation was resolved safely.
The young person’s mum was so touched by their kindness and support that she brought sweets, treats and crisps into youth club as a thank you to everyone involved.
That’s the community we’ve created at YMCA The Haven.
A community built on respect, kindness, friendship and looking after one another. We couldn’t be prouder of the young people who walk through our doors every week and continually prove that there is so much more to them than the stereotypes they are often judged by 🩵
