Huge thanks to our Speaker, Sean McAlinden for getting our Season off to a great start last night with a very enjoyable and informative talk on making the best use of a small greenhouse over the Winter period. The talk covered giving protection to tender plants by covering them in a layer of fleece to how to lift and prepare dahlia tubers for storing. Another good tip was to put as many plants as possible onto shelving to keep them off the cold floor. Sean’s talk also focused on getting ahead for Spring/Summer by sowing some hardy annuals such as Sweet Pea and also early vegetables such as certain Nantes carrot varieties. He also stressed the importance of keeping the greenhouse well-ventilated on milder days to prevent mold (botrytis) to keep the air circulating. Another recommendation was the use of sticky traps as the most effective, pesticide-free option for controlling any whiteflies, greenflies, blackflies before they infested the plants and damaged them. At the end of the talk there was an opportunity for questions to be put to the Speaker. It was fantastic to see such a good turnout for this meeting from all the returning familiar faces to those who were attending for the first time, we really hope you enjoyed the evening and will become part of our gardening family.
