Club members spent a pleasant day at the Bridport Community Charter Fair meeting many good people from other organisations, local residents and visitors. They spread the word about Bridport Rotary's support for many needy causes in our local community as well as for those nationally and world-wide.

The West Bay Beach Wheelchair project featured on our stand and we were delighted that two of their volunteers, Kate and Annabelle, joined us during the day. Details about the project are at https://bridportandwestbay.co.uk/beach-wheelchair-scheme/

We were also pleased to welcome a Rotarian from District 52 in Beijing, China. She was attracted to our Gazebo because she recognised the Rotary wheel. It was a very pleasant encounter but translation proved to be tricky!

The Charter Fair celebrates the granting of Bridport’s Market Charter 773 years ago by King Henry III in recognition of the town’s rope-making industry, and Bridport’s Citizens’ Charter, reflecting the principles of the 1998 Human Rights Act, and confirming Bridport becoming the UK's first Rights Respecting Town in 2018.

On Saturday 18 April an enthusiastic audience, including the Bridport Mayor Cllr Anne Rickard, enjoyed an evening of Jazz from Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO), under their director and conductor Terry Quinney.

For more on the concert, including more photos head to our webpage https://rotary-ribi.org/clubs/page.php?PgID=999536&ClubID=1197

And for details of the DYJO go to https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/w/dorset-youth-jazz-orchestra-dyjo

The orchestra, under the auspices of the Dorset Music Service, aims to deliver high quality music education for young people across Dorset. The members of the orchestra certainly demonstrated that high quality at our concert on Saturday.

The evening was organised by our Club to raise funds for the Portable Ventilator Appeal at Dorchester County Hospital in partnership with other Rotary Clubs.

Who Cares? - This is the question that was examined during the presentation by Fran Gleason from Weldmar Hospicecare.

We learnt about the services provided by this end-of-life support team and at the end our overwhelming conclusion was that Weldmar Cares!

As well as clinical and nursing care, practical and emotional support is offered to patients and those who are important to them. And, towards the end of life, those in care are helped to make the most of every day.

Here are some snippets from Fran’s talk:
• Nurses are considered to be angels.
• Sam, the chef, prepares bespoke meals for each patient each day.
• Marian’s room is dedicated for use by the families of patients.
• Extraordinary dying wishes can sometimes be arranged.
• They focus on “getting our ducks in a row.

Since establishment in 1994 Weldmar has continued to focus on their vision: Making every moment matter”

The whole process of providing end of life care is thought out from the patient’s standpoint.

Weldmar are able to excel in providing this level of care because “the people of Dorset are so generous!”

This was a very convincing presentation, thank you Fran Gleason.

Supporting Julia's Hospice - Our Club recently presented a cheque for £600 to Judith Munden who is the representative for Julia's House in Bridport. The donation was part of the proceeds from the sale of pots of Hyacinths that took place in the weeks leading up to Christmas 2025.

The Club also used some of the proceeds to sponsor a student through SOS Africa and the balance will be used, in the future, to assist local charities.

In the first photo, Judith and Chris Munden are seen receiving the donation from Malcolm French, Club President, and Colin Bowditch representing the Club.

The second picture shows Judith and a helper on the Julia's House stall outside the Bridport United Church with some of the bulbs that were left at the end of our final day of selling. The money raised from these also went to their Charity.

Julia's House is a Children's Hospice which brings comfort and care to families in Dorset and Wiltshire. Julia's House helps those children, and their families, who have a very serious medical condition.

The Rotary Club of Bridport is pleased to donate for such a very worthy cause.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)
Following a presentation to students at the Sir John Colfox Academy by Isabel Glazbrook, our newest and youngest Friend of Rotary, students were invited to apply for places on the RYLA scheme which will be held in the summer this year.

Following interviews of appicants by a panel from our Club, two students will be selected to go on the course with their places fully funded by the Rotary Club of Bridport.

RYLA is one of the youth activities supported by Rotary Clubs. It offers young people the opportunity to take part in a challenging and adventurous week in the Brecon Beacons and meet lots of other young people.

The week-long residential course concentrates on a range of outdoor activities designed to help students develop their team-working skills, leadership and improve their self-confidence.

The Rotary Club of Bridport recently held the opening round of 'Youth Speaks a Debate' in the Bridport Town Hall, a suitably august venue for the students to display their debating skills.

The competition is held throughout the country and involves a number of layers of increasing competition from other schools culminating in a national final. Previous teams from the Sir John Colfox Academy have reached the southern region final and one went all the way to the national final to finish as runners up.

Teams from Sunninghill Prep school in Dorchester and the Sir John Colfox Academy debated topics such as 'The ethicality of space travel', 'Game Bird shooting' and 'Space exploration is irresponsible'.

The senior team from Colfox comprising Poppy Sweet, Iris Mold and Elisa Groves and the intermediate team from Sunninghill comprising Rosa Constant, Lottie Allison and Louis Norton will now progress to the District final which will be held in the Taunton School on Saturday 28th February. We wish them every success.
