A wet one at Growers Row this week! Which meant cleaning up the polytunnel and a few other inside jobs like fixing the lawn mower.

We planted a great number of gifted Marigolds grown by HMS Stocken for the County Show. Marigolds are great plants for attracting pollinating insects and repelling insects that eat the fruit and vegetables we plant.

We are still harvesting salad leaves and beetroot, as well as very large onions and some potatoes this week, which made it straight to the plate (see photos).

Due to the weather, we have a shortened Plant ID Wild Workshop with a view of running it again later in the year. Keep an eye on the bookings page for details, link below.

What happened at Lerntree this week?

This week, we spent a lot of time at Rutland Water. Enjoying the open park spaces, SSSI nature reserve, and we took to the water on the Rutland Belle and visited the Ospreys at Manton Bay.

Rutland is home to nesting Ospreys from March through to August, all thanks to a very successful translocated program initiated in the 1990s. The Manton Bay nest provides the opportunity each year to see nest building, eggs hatching, and chicks growing and fledging, either from the hide or on these live webcams

By spending time in these wonderful places that are on our "doorstep", we not only learn about our local area, we also gain the "sense of belonging", the subjective feeling of deep connection with social groups, physical places, and individual and collective experiences, known to be a fundamental human need, which predicts numerous mental, physical, social, economic, and behavioural outcomes.
Lerntree is a progressive education provision in Rutland, running one and a half days a week, for ages 7+.

The Horticultural Marquee at the 192nd Rutland County Show was humming with visitors yesterday.

There were some wonderful displays from Oakham in Bloom, Uppingham in Bloom, White Goose Farm, Rutland Flower Club, Stocken Prison, Oakham Canal Green Corridor Project and Women in Sheds. Along with 'gardens in a pot' from young gardeners and members of the community.

All exhibits were judged by Jane Barnes, President of Rutland Agricultural Society, Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Sarah Furness and Rutland High Sheriff, Susannah Fish.

The central display showed how we can bring more wildlife into our gardens. Young visitors found the eight toy animals hidden in the display.
