🦔🎨 Can you help make South Molton safer for hedgehogs?

Hedgehogs are part of what makes our towns and villages special, but they often face risks when moving through our streets and green spaces.

That's why we're inviting local people to help create a series of eye-catching signs encouraging drivers and residents to look out for these much-loved visitors.

Join Jack, South Molton's Biosphere Communities Animator, and Cathy from Earth Action North Devon for a creative evening where your ideas could help shape signs used around the town.

📸🌿 The MyBiosphere 2026 Photo Exhibition is now open!

What does the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere mean to you?

For some, it's a wildlife encounter. For others, it's a favourite walk, a view, a river, a beach, or a moment spent outdoors with family and friends.

The MyBiosphere 2026 Photo Exhibition brings together photographs from people across northern Devon, celebrating the landscapes, wildlife and communities that make this place so special.

📍 On display now at The Planetary Lab, Barnstaple until midday on 18 September
📍 Then at Pannier Pantry, Bideford on 19 September

And this year, you can help decide the winners!

🗳️ Visit the exhibition and vote for your favourite photographs as part of our new Community Vote.

Sustainable Hatherleigh and partners are offering two free Water Quality Awareness & Testing Training sessions this autumn.

These practical sessions are a great opportunity to learn more about:
💧 What affects water quality
🔬 How water testing works
🌱 The role local communities can play in caring for rivers and streams
🤝 Opportunities to get involved in local environmental action

Whether you're already part of a river group or simply curious about the health of the watercourses around you, this training will provide useful knowledge and practical skills.

Why not get creative and take part in our Marine Art Challenge?

We're inviting creatives of all ages to celebrate the incredible marine wildlife of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere through original artwork. From seals and seabirds to fish, jellyfish, rockpool creatures and underwater habitats, we're looking for inspiring creations that showcase the beauty and diversity of our marine environment.

✨ Selected entries will help inspire the design of a new public display board at Ilfracombe Harbour.

How to enter
✅ Create an original image inspired by marine life in the North Devon Biosphere
✅ Use any medium, including drawing, painting, digital art, collage or mixed media
✅ Submit your artwork by 21 September at 6pm

We'd also love to see artwork that promotes caring for wildlife and responsible wildlife experiences.

Most of the life in soil remains hidden. The moment soil is dug up, many of the delicate structures that make it function begin to disappear.
Join Professor Karl Ritz, Emeritus Professor of Soil Ecology at the University of Nottingham, for a rare opportunity to explore living soil up close using research-grade stereo microscopes.

You'll discover:
🌱 Living root systems
🕸 Underground networks and soil structure
🐛 Soil organisms and their habitats
🔬 How healthy soils support food, wildlife and climate resilience

This small-group workshop is ideal for anyone curious about the natural world, especially A-level students, undergraduates and those interested in ecology, biology, geology, geography or environmental science.

From beach cleans to rock pool rambles, water quality testing to workshops on marine pollution and ocean plastics, Saturday at the Surf & Conservation Film Festival is all about getting hands-on with the coast we're here to protect.

And here's the best bit: all daytime workshops and stalls are completely FREE – no ticket needed! Just turn up, get involved, and meet the local organisations doing the work.

Friday 21 August at the Surf & Conservation Film Festival brings the Save The Waves Film Festival screening to Freshwell Camping. And before the films, we've got an incredible talk panel diving into surf conservation and making the sport more accessible to everyone.

Meet the panelists 👇

🔵 Suzanne Edwards: Parateam/Surfing England. Para surfer, accessibility advocate and two-time English Para Surfing Champion. After a life-changing spinal cord injury, Suzanne rediscovered surfing as a prone surfer and now represents Team England internationally – championing inclusion in and out of the water.

🔵 Nick Rees: Dryrobe. Over 15 years in the surf industry, now Global Partnerships Manager at Dryrobe. Previously COO at Surfing England and Surf Manager at The Wave.

🔵 Ella Sullivan: Saunton Surf Sisters. Founder of Saunton Surf Sisters, a North Devon community empowering women through surfing, friendship and a shared connection to the ocean.

🔵 James A. Grant: Reinventing the Ride. Photographer blending fine art, fashion and documentary storytelling. His touring exhibition explores the people and ideas driving more sustainable surfboard design across the UK.

🔵 Ian Bennett: The Wave Project. Adaptive Lead and pioneer at The Wave Project, providing surf therapy and inclusive ocean activities for people with physical and mental disabilities. BBC South West Unsung Hero award winner for his work out of Croyde.

🔵 Roger Sheridan: Surfing England. Head of Professional Services at Surfing England, with 20+ years in sport and leisure management. A passionate advocate for marine conservation, especially Surfing England's Surfer Scientists Seagrass Project.
