For anyone who wasn't able to visit us on the recent Heritage Open Days we are open this Saturday 3rd October 10.30am-3pm.

Limited parking is available on site but it's well worth a walk along canal to see the canal basin that played a key role in the history of the site.

Come and meet our most recent volunteer... who loves to move around the site and learn more about the local industrial heritage.

Lots of books and information on site and we're always looking to learn more.

We were delighted and honoured to host John Snook and Alan Wood performing a selection of songs live at the colliery this afternoon, and bringing the sunshine with them!

Thanks for bringing the history and spirit of mining back to our site.

This year's Heritage Open Days theme is Everyday Histories.

To tie in with this, the Friends of Hemingfield Colliery have presented a talk on Everyday lives at Elsecar Heritage Centre, and a display on this theme at RSPB Old Moor which can be seen until Sunday 20th Sept 2026.

We also have an additional display at Pump House Cottage at Hemingfield Colliery, and finally, we have produced a small series of 3 "Journeys into the past" to complement these histories, describing visits 3 different industrial sites in and around Hoyland and Elsecar, a colliery, an ironworks, and a brickworks.

These booklets can be purchased from the site.

Skipping through into Summer.
An update from the Friends from May to August.

As of August, the summer of 2026 has been a punishing stretch of hot dry weather. Little rain. Ground parched. Yellowed grass and wilting plants. A rapid recap of how we got here and the Friends& #8…

Another busy working day on site on Sat 1st August - what better way to celebrate Yorkshire Day together !?

As well as keeping on top of the garden, some rubble sorting was under way down the side of the site.

As well as discussions of plans for Heritage Open Days in September, we also tried on some new tshirts, much needed in the hot sun.

20/07/2026

Busy bees down by Pit Row, just like our regular volunteers!
