A free course every day, this Monday to Friday!

It’s Get the Nation Learning Week, the Learning and Work Institute’s campaign to champion adult learning, and VIA has signed the charter. So five live sessions are free to EVERYONE!

Why? We don’t think learning should depend on where you live, how old you are or how confident you feel with technology. Signing a charter is the easy part, this week is us getting on with it.

Book the ones you fancy, then tag a friend who keeps saying they’d like to try something new, because it’s hard to say no to a free course with company.

Dr Ruth Stalker-Firth returns to VIA tomorrow evening, for WI Day, with her course When Women Were Computers.

Ruth is a computer scientist with a PhD in AI, who spent years assuming women were always a minority in tech. Ruth's first talk with us in 2024 led to the one she'll present tomorrow, and for her, learning that women in fact invented programming and software engineering changed everything. As she puts it: "The WI helped me remember who I am. It showed me what women can do when we come together."

Join Ruth live on WI Day itself, Wednesday 16th September at 7.30pm 💪

Celebrate WI Day on VIA 🎉 On 16 September 1915, the first WI meeting was held in Britain, and 111 years on, there's still a lot worth marking.

To celebrate, we've put together a full programme of courses running through September, and Murron Fraser's Women in Folklore, live tomorrow at 3pm, is a great place to start.

You can book Murron's course and see the full WI Day line-up here: https://via.thewi.org.uk/what-we-are-talking-about?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic_social&utm_campaign=wi_day_2026&utm_content=women_in_folklore

Blonde curls, pink cars, perfect smiles… classic Hollywood knew how to create an image.

But what did that image teach women to be?

Join Roseanne Hurst this Thursday for a fascinating look at women and film in the 1950s-1960s, exploring how iconic mid-century films shaped ideas of glamour, romance, domesticity and femininity in post-war America.

From Marilyn Monroe and Doris Day to Disney heroines, this live session looks beyond the silver screen to uncover the cultural scripts hidden in some very familiar films.

Witches. Spirits. Séances.

By the 1850s, there were an estimated 30,000 mediums in the UK, and Spiritualism had become deeply embedded in Victorian life. But the story starts much earlier - with a biblical witch tasked with calling up the dead, and continues right through to the way people practise and experience spirituality today.

Join Dr Julia Phillips for a fascinating, stranger-than-fiction history in one live evening talk.

Live tomorrow, Monday 8th June at 6pm. Free for WI members & paid subscribers 🌙
