A charity to teach computing skills at internet cafes within the city of Aberdeen, Scotland. Run by volunteers and it is free of charge.

Silver City Surfers is a local charity helping the digitally isolated to learn basic computer skills 1-to-1 in a social setting in Aberdeen. We provide free one-to-one tutoring and support on all forms of technology, such as laptops, tablets, smart phones and digital cameras. Our volunteer tutors work with individuals at their own speed in a friendly Internet café type environment.

👻 Tool of the Week: Take a trip back to the internet's haunted past! 🎃

Ever wondered what your favourite websites looked like 10, 15 or even 20 years ago?

This week's tool is the Wayback Machine - and it's a real blast from the past! 🕸️

🌐 Visit https://web.archive.org

🔎 Type in the address of a website you'd like to explore.

📅 Choose an available date from the calendar.

🧙‍♀️ Travel back in time to see how that website looked years ago!

You might discover long-forgotten designs, old logos or websites that have completely disappeared from today's internet.

Not every website or page has been saved, but there's plenty to explore.

No spells, potions or time machines required! 🪄😂

👻 Hidden Feature Wednesday: A little keyboard magic! 🪄🎃

Ever spotted a mistake in a message and struggled to put the cursor in exactly the right place to fix it?

No need for any Halloween hocus-pocus - your phone's keyboard might have a hidden trick! 🧙‍♀️

📱 On an iPhone: Press and hold the space bar until the keyboard turns into a trackpad. Then slide your finger to move the cursor exactly where you need it.

🤖 On many Android phones: If you're using Google's Gboard keyboard, slide your finger left or right across the space bar to move the cursor.

✨ It's a handy little trick for correcting messages without deleting and retyping whole words!

🎃 Tech Tip Tuesday: Don't get tricked by a QR code! 👻

QR codes are everywhere these days - on posters, menus, parking machines and even Halloween events!

But beware… not every QR code is a treat! 🍬

👀 Look before you scan! Check that a QR code hasn't been covered with a suspicious sticker.

🔗 Check the website address. Before entering any details, make sure the link takes you somewhere you recognise and trust.

💳 Be cautious with payments. If a QR code asks for bank details unexpectedly, stop and check.

🧙 When in doubt, find the website yourself! Search for the organisation's official website rather than following an unfamiliar QR code.

A little caution can help keep those digital gremlins at bay! 👻

Did You Know? Your phone can help you spot things that go bump in the night! 👻

Ever wondered what made that strange noise outside, or wanted to check what's lurking at the bottom of the garden after dark? 🦇

Here's a handy trick!

📱 Many smartphones have a Night Mode built into their cameras, helping you take clearer photographs in low light.

🌙 On an iPhone, Night Mode may appear automatically when the camera detects low light.

🤖 On Android, look for a setting called Night, Night Sight or something similar, depending on your phone.

📸 Hold your phone as still as possible while it takes the photograph. It may need a few seconds to capture enough light.

It's great for photographing Halloween decorations, glowing pumpkins or even the moonlit garden!

And don't worry if you spot something spooky in your photograph, it's probably just the neighbour's cat! 😂🐈‍⬛

Success Story Friday – Sometimes success is simply having a go!

It's Get Online Week, and we're celebrating the small steps that can make a big difference.

At Silver City Surfers, success doesn't always mean mastering a complicated new skill.

Sometimes it's:

📧 Sending an email without needing someone to do it for you.

📱 Finding a setting on your phone that you've never noticed before.

💻 Understanding something that's been confusing you for weeks.

😊 Or simply feeling comfortable enough to ask a question.

Every learner comes to us with different experiences, interests and goals. That's why our volunteers work one-to-one, at a pace that suits each person.

And there's no expectation that you'll know everything after one visit!

Learning something new is worth celebrating, however small that step might seem.

Tool of the Week – GhostViewer: See Through Time! 📸

Do you remember what your hometown looked like years ago? The shops that have disappeared, the buildings that have changed, or the streets that look completely different today?

Well, here's something fascinating to explore!

This week's tool is GhostViewer, a free website that lets you discover historic photographs of places across the UK and explore how they've changed over time.

🏘️ Browse old photographs of towns, streets and landmarks.

🗺️ Explore an interactive map to discover places from the past.

📸 View before-and-after comparisons of familiar locations where available.

🕰️ You can even use the website's tools to compare your own old and new photographs!

It's a lovely way to take a trip down memory lane, explore local history or discover somewhere completely new.
