Silver City Surfers A charity to teach computing skills at internet cafes within the city of Aberdeen, Scotland. Run by volunteers and it is free of charge.

Silver City Surfers is a local charity helping the digitally isolated to learn basic computer skills 1-to-1 in a social setting in Aberdeen. We provide free one-to-one tutoring and support on all forms of technology, such as laptops, tablets, smart phones and digital cameras. Our volunteer tutors work with individuals at their own speed in a friendly Internet café type environment.

💡 MYTH BUSTER THURSDAY 💡

We're continuing our Myth Buster series with another misconception we hear quite often.

❌ MYTH: You need to come every week.

✅ FACT: You can come as often or as little as you like.

Some learners visit us every week because they're building their confidence with technology or have something new they'd like to learn. Some people come for the company and a cuppa.

Others might come once to solve a particular problem and then not need us again for months.

Some people visit several different sessions each week, while others pop in only when they get stuck.

There is no commitment, no membership and no expectation that you attend regularly.

Whether you need help with one quick issue, want ongoing support, or just fancy learning something new, you're always welcome at Silver City Surfers.

💡 MYTH BUSTER WEDNESDAY 💡

We're continuing our Myth Buster series by tackling another common misconception about Silver City Surfers.

❌ MYTH: We only help with computers.

✅ FACT: We help with all kinds of technology!

While some learners come along with laptops and computers, our volunteers regularly help with:

📱 Smartphones
📟 Tablets
💻 Laptops
📧 Emails
🌐 Internet and Wi-Fi issues
📄 Microsoft Office
📷 Cameras
⌚ Fitbits and smart watches

And plenty more besides!

Technology looks different for everyone. For one person it might be sending their first email. For another it might be downloading an app, organising photos, connecting to Wi-Fi, or figuring out why something suddenly stopped working.

If it has buttons, a screen, an app, or connects to the internet, there's a good chance we can help!

💡 MYTH BUSTER TUESDAY 💡

This week we're tackling some of the most common myths we hear about Silver City Surfers.

❌ MYTH: We run computer classes.

✅ FACT: We run free drop-in sessions where you bring your device and your questions.

Unlike a traditional class, there is no set topic, lesson plan or expectation that everyone learns the same thing.

You decide what you would like help with.

Maybe you want to:
📱 Learn how to use your smartphone
💻 Get to grips with your laptop
📧 Set up or manage your emails
🛒 Learn online shopping
📸 Organise your photos
🔒 Stay safe online
📲 Download and use apps

Or perhaps you have a specific problem that needs fixed.

Our volunteers provide one-to-one support and will work at your pace, helping you build your skills and confidence along the way.

And if you'd like to come back every week to keep learning, that's absolutely fine too! Some learners visit us once for a specific issue, while others come regularly to learn something new and build their confidence each time. Both are equally welcome.

This week, we'll be tackling some of the most common myths and misconceptions we hear about Silver City Surfers.

From who can attend our sessions to what kind of help we offer, we'll be separating fact from fiction and sharing what Silver City Surfers is really all about!

Today's Myth Busting is:

❌ MYTH: Silver City Surfers is only for people aged over 55.

✅ FACT: Not anymore!

Back in the day when Silver City Surfers started, we only supported people over the age of 55. But just like with the advancement of technology, Silver City Surfers now supports anyone aged 18+ who would like help with their technology.

Whether you need help with a phone, tablet, laptop, email, online forms, apps, staying connected with family and friends, or simply building your confidence, our friendly volunteers are here to help.

Technology is for everyone, and so are we! 😊

❗Please note that our Woodside & Fountain Centre session is NOT running today as the centre is closed for the World Cup Bank Holiday.

One of the loveliest things about our sessions is watching confidence grow.

Sometimes it starts with:

📱 learning how to answer a video call
📧 understanding where emails are stored
🔊 turning the volume up properly
😊 or simply feeling comfortable enough to ask questions

We’re lucky to have volunteers of all ages at Silver City Surfers, and there’s something really special about seeing different generations helping each other with technology. We're looking forward to welcoming our younger volunteers back after their exams!

We’re really excited to be bringing Silver City Surfers to Middlefield Community Hub from Friday 5th June 2026!

When Silver City Surfers first started more than 20 years ago, we supported people aged 55+ with technology.

Today, we support anyone aged 18 and over.

One thing we hear quite often is:
“Oh, I thought you were just for older people!”

The reality is that technology can be frustrating, confusing or overwhelming at any age 😊

People come to us for help with:

📱 phone settings
📧 email problems
💻 laptop updates
🌐 online forms
🔒 scam worries
🤔 or simply building confidence with everyday technology

Whatever your age or experience level, everybody is welcome.

Time changes… and technology does too.

At our Cummings Park Community Flat session, there’s a lovely handmade Silver City Surfers clock on the wall that always gets people talking 😊

Over the years we’ve gone from:
⏰ winding clocks
📞 house phones
📺 analogue TV

…to smartphones, online banking, video calls and apps for almost everything.

That can feel like a huge leap sometimes.

The good news is you don’t need to figure it all out on your own.

Whether you want help understanding your phone, learning the basics of a tablet, or just getting more confident with technology, we’re here to help patiently and at your pace.

🚶‍♀️🎉 Kiltwalk 2026 – Thank You! 🎉🚶‍♀️

On Sunday, Adrianne, Cathy and Anna donned their Silver City Surfers t-shirts and took part in the Aberdeen Kiltwalk Wee Wander to help raise funds for Silver City Surfers.

The weather thankfully held and spirits were high and our walkers successfully crossed the finish line, proudly collecting their medals along the way! 🏅

Originally, Fay was due to take part too, but unfortunately a family emergency meant she was unable to join the team on the day.

We're delighted to share that, thanks to the kindness and generosity of our supporters, a fantastic £345 was raised for Silver City Surfers!

Every pound raised helps us continue providing free technology support sessions across Aberdeen, helping people build confidence with their phones, tablets, laptops and online services.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, shared our fundraising pages, encouraged our walkers or cheered them on from afar. Your support really does make a difference.

And, of course, congratulations and thank you to Adrianne, Cathy and Anna for representing Silver City Surfers and completing the walk. We're very proud of you all! 👏

Usually it happens in tiny moments.
