Throughout this week we've talked about the pressures people carry, the conversations that don't happen and the importance of supporting people before they reach breaking point.

But there's one group that's often overlooked.

The people everyone else depends on.

Business owners. Managers. Team leaders.

The people checking in on others, solving problems and carrying responsibility every day.

It's easy to make time for the team.

It's much harder to make time for yourself.

As Men's Health Week comes to a close, perhaps that's the question worth reflecting on.

Everyone else got your attention.

Did you?

Most organisations have a plan for when somebody is struggling.

Fewer have a plan for helping people before they get there.

We understand preventative maintenance in almost every area of life.

We service vehicles before they break down.
We repair small problems before they become expensive ones.
We invest early to avoid bigger costs later.

People are no different.

By the time somebody burns out, resigns or reaches crisis point, the cost has often already been paid.

The strongest wellbeing strategies focus on prevention, not reaction.

That's not just good for people.

It's good for organisations too.

Most people know the expected answer.

"How are you?"

"Fine."

Conversation over.

The problem is that many people aren't actually looking for a real answer anymore. It's become a greeting rather than a question.

For men especially, it can be easier to give the expected response than explain what's really going on.

Supportive workplaces aren't built on asking the question once.

They're built on creating environments where people know it's safe to answer honestly.

Sometimes the most important conversations start with somebody being willing to ask again.

One of the biggest myths about wellbeing is that if somebody is coping, they must be "okay".

But coping and thriving aren't the same thing.

Many men become experts at carrying things quietly.

Pressure.
Responsibility.
Financial worries.
Family concerns.
Work stress.

From the outside, everything can look fine.

They're still showing up. Still doing the job. Still getting things done.

The problem is that we often mistake competence for capacity.

Just because somebody is carrying it well doesn't mean the load isn't heavy.

That's why proactive care matters.

Not because people are failing.

Because sometimes the people who appear strongest are carrying more than anyone realises.

Most people wouldn't ignore a crack in their windscreen.

Not because it's causing a problem today.

Because they know what happens if they leave it.

Stress can be similar.

It often starts small. A bit more pressure. Less patience. Poorer sleep. Feeling constantly switched on.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that stops you showing up to work tomorrow.

But small problems have a habit of growing when they're ignored.

For many men, that's exactly what happens. They keep going. Keep coping. Keep telling themselves they'll deal with it later.

Men's Health Week isn't just about raising awareness.

It's about recognising that proactive care is often easier, healthier and far less costly than waiting until something reaches breaking point.

Before Monday begins, here's a question.

You encourage your team to take breaks. You remind them to switch off. You tell them not to take work home with them.

But did you?

For many business owners and leaders, the weekend isn't really a weekend. It's a chance to catch up on emails, think about next week, solve problems and carry responsibilities that don't fit neatly into office hours.

Over time, that can become so normal that we stop noticing it.

Supporting workplace wellbeing isn't only about looking after employees. The people carrying the responsibility need support too.

So before another week begins, it might be worth asking yourself the same question you'd ask your team:

Have you had a chance to properly switch off?

Poor mental health costs UK employers around £51 billion every year.

That figure is hard to ignore, but behind it are people who have often been carrying pressure for far too long before support ever reaches them.

For many men, that pressure is hidden. They keep working, keep answering emails, keep showing up to meetings and keep saying they’re fine, even when they’re running on empty.

By the time the problem becomes visible, it may already be affecting their health, their work, their relationships and the people around them.

That’s why proactive support matters. Not as a tick-box benefit, but as a practical way to spot pressure earlier, make conversation easier and help people before things reach breaking point.

With Men’s Health Week approaching, now is a good time for workplaces to ask whether support is truly accessible, or only offered once someone is already struggling.

One of the biggest misconceptions about workplace wellbeing is that managers need to have all the answers.

They don't.

Most people aren't looking for somebody to solve every problem they're facing. Often, they simply want somebody to notice when something isn't quite right.

A change in behaviour.

A quieter than usual colleague.

Someone who seems distracted, withdrawn, or under pressure.

During Men's Health Month, it's worth remembering that support doesn't always begin with a big conversation.

Sometimes it starts with a simple observation and a genuine check-in.

"You don't seem yourself lately. How are things?"

Managers aren't therapists.

They shouldn't have to be.

But creating a culture where people feel seen, valued, and comfortable speaking up can make a huge difference.

Sometimes the most important thing isn't having the perfect response.

It's noticing in the first place.

When businesses think about mental health, they often think about sickness absence.

The bigger cost is usually the people who are still turning up.

Recent Deloitte research found poor mental health costs UK employers around £51 billion every year. The largest contributor isn't absence. It's presenteeism, people coming to work while struggling and operating well below their usual capacity.

That loss shows up everywhere.

Reduced productivity.

Poorer decision-making.

More mistakes.

Lower engagement.

Higher staff turnover.

The challenge is that most of it happens quietly.

Nobody submits a sick note for feeling overwhelmed.

Nobody reports that they're carrying stress, financial worries, relationship pressures, or mental health challenges that are affecting their performance.

They simply keep going.

That's why proactive support matters.

The earlier people have trusted opportunities to talk, the less likely challenges are to grow into bigger problems that affect both the individual and the organisation.

Mental health support isn't simply a wellbeing initiative.

It's good business.
