Those most affected must have meaningful participation in shaping their future. And those who advocate for their rights must be protected.

Climate justice means ensuring that finance and resources actually reach frontline Pacific communities who need them most.

Stakeholder Strategic Workshop on Constitutional Reform in Fiji

As we commemorated 2026 this week under the global theme “At the Heart of Democracy,” we are reminded that democracy is strongest when every person can live with dignity, equality and safety.

In remarks delivered by Heike Alefsen at the Stakeholder Strategic Workshop on Constitutional Reform in Fiji, OHCHR Pacific stood in solidarity with LGBTQI+ communities across the Pacific and around the world who continue to face discrimination, violence, misinformation and exclusion — and who also continue to defend their rights and lead with courage, resilience and clarity of purpose.

The Pacific continues to see important conversations around inclusion, constitutional reform, civic participation and human rights. It is important that no one is left behind in these discussions.

Human rights are not selective. Equality cannot be conditional. Dignity should never depend on popularity or political convenience.
