🎥 📷 📱 Protect Our Youth — Uphold Their Dignity.

As media professionals, content creators, and photographers, we hold the powerful responsibility of capturing moments that inspire and uplift. When working around young people, especially at events like the Coca-Cola Games, we must ensure that our content protects their dignity, privacy, and well-being.

Exploitation is not art. Sensationalism is not storytelling.
Children and young people must never be portrayed in ways that objectify, expose, or harm them.

Let’s commit to ethical standards, respectful storytelling, and a culture where every young person feels safe and celebrated.
Our lenses should capture their achievements — not compromise their dignity.

RATU KADAVULEVU SCHOOL FIRE INCIDENT

The Minister for Education, Hon Aseri Radrodro has advised the Principal of Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) to contact all the parents and guardians of students affected by a fire that occurred around 12pm today and have them picked up from school.

The Principal and staff of RKS, with the guidance of the Ministry of Education officials in the school premises have organised temporary residence for the 145 students who lost their belongings in the fire.

Twenty-nine Year 9 students are currently billeted at the Annex 107, 38 Year Ten students are housed in Degei Dorm '66' and the 59 Year 11 students will be accommodated at the Top Floor of Cakau House.

Transportation (bus) will be provided to affected students from the Nausori-Suva corridor and the Western division tomorrow.

Minister Radrodro advises parents and guardians that the Ministry of Education has provisions for counselling through the Substance Abuse & Advisory Council (SAAC).

No information can be released on the details about the probable cause of the fire as fire officers are still conducting investigations at the site.

145 students were affected by the fire at Sukuna House after teachers spotted excessive smoke emanating from the roof of the Sukuna house hostel building at around 12.00 noon after the school’s mid-day prayer.

The Korovou Fire Station was immediately contacted by the school principal and the fire fighters arrived at the scene to contain the fire from breaking out to the other hostel buildings.

The 145 students of Sukuna house lost boarding kits, however, students from the other Houses have been advised to share hostel items.

All the students, teachers and staff are safe and with no reported injuries.

Ni Sa Bula Vinaka, Namaste, As-salamu alaykum and Noa’ia e Mauri Fiji.

As the Minister responsible for the care and protection of children, I am deeply concerned with the posting and sharing of a gruesome video on social media of a child who was victim in a fatal car accident in Rakiraki.

The Ministry condemns such postings which are disrespectful to the victims and their families. Additionally, posting of such pictures could cause psychological trauma to the victim’s family members, as well as any social media user these gruesome videos are forwarded to.

I urge all social media users to stop this inhumane act and please think twice before sharing such posts.

To all Fijians, our country is built on the foundations of love and care therefore I plead that whenever you come across someone in danger or in need of help, please assist wherever possible and avoid using their suffering or pain for social media popularity.

Bula Vinaka, Namaste and Noa'ia E Mauri Fiji.

As the Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, I am deeply saddened by the recent incidents of domestic violence that have shaken our nation over the weekend. First and foremost, my condolences go out to the families of the late Ms. Nazmun Nisha, allegedly murdered in Labasa, and are mourning her death because of this tragic and unjust event. I want them to know that I stand with them and share in their grief.

The severe stabbing of another woman in Lautoka, serve as grim reminders of the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of gender-based violence against women and girls in our society.

To the men who believe that violence is acceptable and a means of control and expression of masculinity, I warn you to reconsider your beliefs and actions. The law and the legal system will hold you accountable for your actions, ensuring that justice is served for all the victims and survivors. Violence against women and girls including domestic violence is a crime. Violence is never a solution, and it can never be justified. Real strength lies in fostering respectful, healthy, and equitable relationships. Violence is a symptom of weakness and psychological wreck.

Let me be unequivocal: violence against women and girls is not a private matter. It is a national issue and crisis that demands our collective attention, action, and condemnation. We all must recognize and uphold women’s rights. We cannot stand idle while our sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends suffer and their rights being violated. It is our duty to ensure that every woman and girl feels safe, and their rights are protected. There can be no progress in Fiji when a significant portion of our population lives in fear and experiences violence within their own homes, schools, workplaces, recreational areas, and places of worship.

To all Fijian women, girls, and individuals who are experiencing violence and abuse, I urgently implore you to take immediate action and reach out for support. The National Domestic Violence Helpline (1560) and National Child Helpline (1325) are dedicated to serving you, alongside our expert civil society partners. Do not hesitate to report the perpetrators and seek the assistance you deserve. We stand united in our unwavering commitment to ensuring your safety and well-being. Your courage in speaking up and seeking help is of utmost importance in breaking the cycle of gender-based violence.

On 2nd June, Fiji will make history by launching the National Action Plan to Prevent Violence against All Women and Girls (2023-2028). This ground-breaking initiative, which encompasses the entire government and population, marks a momentous milestone for Fiji. Being the first Pacific Island Country and one of only two countries worldwide, alongside Australia, to embrace a comprehensive, inclusive, and evidence-based approach, we are committed to preventing violence against all women and girls.

The global evidence unequivocally shows that violence against women and girls is not an inevitable occurrence but a preventable one. This realization presents us with a significant opportunity as individuals, institutions, communities, and leaders to actively engage in effective implementation of the National Action Plan in challenging and addressing the root causes that lie at the core of this national crisis.

I shall point out that over the course of the next 18 months, we will be implementing targeted actions in partnership with all relevant stakeholders across key settings, which includes education, faith-based organizations, youth and sports, and traditional iTaukei as well as the carrying out the service delivery protocols (SDP) to ensure the provision of comprehensive and effective services to all survivors of violence. Detailed information regarding these actions will be unveiled during a ministerial press conference scheduled for June 2nd. The Fiji National Action Plan carries a powerful message: by reshaping power dynamics, challenging gender roles, and rejecting patriarchal norms, we will achieve gender equality and eradicate violence.
