🗳️ What does today's influence industry tell us about tomorrow's digital democracy?

A vast, largely unregulated global industry uses our personal data to give political campaigns insight into who voters are, what they want to hear, and how to persuade them.

Check out which tools, services, and tactics this industry use on to shape public opinion, often without voters ever realizing it's happening.

💭 This resource is part of The Influence Industry Project, which supports civil society in responding to this industry across several areas of work.

📱 You wake up, plan your day, catch up with family, maybe swipe through a dating app, and somewhere in there squeeze in a workout and a holiday booking. A completely ordinary day.

But somewhere along that day, you've handed over pieces of your data to apps whose privacy policies you probably never read.

This poster from The Glass Room shows exactly what happens to our data when we opt in for our consent without much critical thinking.

💭 The Glass Room is our exhibition on data and privacy, designed to make these everyday trade-offs visible and easier to talk about.

It comes in several formats, from a full exhibition space to a portable version that fits in libraries, schools, and events.

☁️ Forget about the cloud.

Did you know that the Internet network is made up of over 600 submarine cables, extending for nearly 1.5 million kilometers overall? It could go around the Earth approximately 38 times!

This poster - part of the larger HelloAI! Exhibition - looks critically at the physical infrastructure hiding behind something that feels completely weightless.

Hello AI! is our interactive exhibition, built to give people a physical space to slow down and think through how AI and algorithms shape everyday life.

The exhibition is customisable and available to host at your organisation, conference, or event.

We rarely see the algorithms shaping our daily lives, only the results: the ads that follow us, the content we're shown, the decisions made about us without our knowledge.

Our latest Hello AI! poster pulls back the curtain on how algorithms actually work, who builds them, and what that means for the choices we think are ours alone.

Hello AI! is our interactive exhibition, built to give people a physical space to slow down and think through how AI and algorithms shape everyday life. Rather than abstract debates about technology, it puts real scenarios in front of people and asks them to sit with the questions.

The exhibition is customisable and available to host at your organisation, conference, or event.

People talk about AI like it's magic, but it's just a machine.

Our Data Detox Bar: AI Edition breaks down what "AI" actually means, because it's not just one thing. Text generators, image generators, and recommendation systems are all lumped under the same label, but they work differently and come with different risks.

Understanding the difference gives you more confidence to talk about what AI can and can't do.

The Data Detox Bar helps you stay safe online. It is an immersive experience that asks participants to refresh themselves with the ingredients for a healthier relationship with technology. The experience is available for organisations, conventions and events.

💡 What does it actually take to support investigative journalism today?

In 2025, 62% of surveyed UK journalists said they saw AI as a large or very large threat to journalism — yet only 32% said their main newsroom provided training on AI technologies (Thurman, Thäsler-Kordonouri, Fletcher, 2025).

Meanwhile, 709 press-freedom violations affecting 1,249 media workers or entities were documented across 36 EU member states and candidate countries in just the first half of 2025 (ECPMF, 2025).

These are very different challenges, but they point to the same thing: supporting investigative journalism cannot depend on one solution.

Funding matters. But so do skills, time, safety, access to investigative methods and tools, opportunities to collaborate across borders, and spaces where journalists can exchange knowledge and build lasting professional connections.

Through grants, training, residencies, resources and spaces for cross-border collaboration, the Collaborative and Investigative Journalism Initiative (CIJI) brings together different forms of support around the realities of investigative work.

Because there isn't one formula for what an investigation needs.

🔎 What has made the biggest difference in your investigative work: funding, time, a particular tool or method, or the right collaborator?📩

Since 2018, Apple has paid effectively nothing in GDPR fines, despite a market cap north of €3 trillion. The regulation exists. The accountability doesn't.

In the final part of our series on "Regulate me, please...", Executive Director Marek Tuszynski argues that policy and fines were never going to fix this on their own. Big Tech has grown into what he calls a political project, with a direct hand in shaping the laws meant to constrain it, deep footholds in education, healthcare, and national security, and now, through AI, an unprecedented ability to study and influence what we think and feel.

Marek's conclusion isn't a call for more regulation as usual. It's a call for the hundreds of organisations working on different pieces of the Big Tech problem to stop working in isolation and start building a coalition as coordinated as the one they're up against.

How do politicians seem to know what messages we want to see and hear? Behind the scenes, an influence industry is hard at work.

The influence industry exposes how political groups work with companies that offer digital services to them help sway your opinions and vote.

With AI, digital influencing methods like targeted ads and misinformation campaigns are supercharged; they have become cheaper and faster, and more persuasive.

Tools go far beyond deepfakes that grab public attention. This graphic represents nearly 300 digital services advertised on the websites of companies in the influence industry.

This poster is part of the interactive exhibition Hello AI! By Tactical Tech. It provides a physical space for participants to consider how the online world effects us everyday.
The exhibition is customizable and available for organisaitons, conferences and events.
