👀 What happens when ordinary citizens are handed the tools, and the invitation, to police each other?

Between 2008 and 2012, Texas Virtual BorderWatch let more than 200,000 volunteers log into live feeds from over 200 cameras along the US-Mexico border, and flag "suspicious activity" with the click of a button. No training or accountability, just a red button and a live stream.

Artist Joana Moll's "The Interfaced Border" recreates this surveillance interface, surfacing the uncomfortable overlap between social media and border control, and the real consequences that followed for the people being watched.

🚨 How do you choose technology that serves people and the planet, when AI, expanding data centres and Big Tech are reshaping everything around you?

For nonprofits, this question hits differently. Financial pressure sits on one shoulder while misinformation, right-wing populism, and growing restrictions on organizing press from the other.

The challenge is no longer how to adopt more technology. It's how to choose tools that protect rights and reduce dependence on commercial providers who answer to shareholders, not missions.

That is the conversation at Greenpeace International's third digital transformation conference for non-profits, "Leveraging our collective power in times of democratic crisis, AI and misinformation." It brings together people from civil society, academia and international development to work out how we address these challenges together.

We'll be there, facilitating an interactive workshop on the challenges nonprofits face with technology and AI. Bring your hardest questions.

🎭 As AI surveillance spreads through our cities, will we move through public space differently?

In 2018, the Chinese government deployed gait recognition software in Hong Kong, technology that claims to identify people by the way they walk, in an effort to quash civil unrest.

In response, artist Liam Young worked with Jacob Jonas The Company to choreograph a dance that does the opposite: movement engineered to confuse the "skeleton detection algorithms" behind this kind of surveillance.

"Choreographic Camouflage" captures something bigger than one protest or one piece of software. Every new monitoring tool prompts a new civilian effort to stay private, a cat-and-mouse relationship most of us are already living inside without realising it.

The Covid-19 pandemic triggered a wave of technological invention almost overnight, and much of it says more about our fears than our solutions.

😷 A wristband that buzzes when you touch your face. An app that predicts outbreaks by scanning social media. A mask that translates what you say while keeping you safe to breathe.

"Technologies of Hope and Fear" takes a snapshot of 100 such technologies developed in response to the outbreak.

🌊 These rivers never existed, and yet they look entirely real.

"Meander" by artist Robert Hodgin generates historical maps of imaginary rivers, inspired by Harold Fisk's 1940s charts of the Mississippi River's shifting course. Using 3D animation software, Hodgin starts with a single guide line and lets it evolve on its own, winding into a fictional landscape shaped by algorithm rather than geology.

💭 Looking at these generated rivers, it's hard not to think about the planetary timeline of real landscapes, and the very human impact reshaping them through pollution, floods, and drought.

Here are 6 tricks that designers and psychologists have developed to keep our brains hooked on our phones:
1. Reward everything: A like, or just knowing someone is typing a response give us the sense of being wanted.
2. Keep it emotional: Emotionally charged content gets clicks, and the internet runs on bite sized click-bait.
3. Feed the desire to get ahead: follower counts give us the feeling that we're extending our social circles.
4. Generate a fear of missing out: don't miss out on new trends, stickers, limited releases, or other rewards.
5. Cultivate urgency: notifications always find you right as you're wondering what to do next.
6. Make it easy to keep going: frictionless design and bottomless content, like infinite scroll, autoplay, and pull to refresh

A deepfake is a video or image made with artificial intelligence that uses the stolen visual identity of someone else. It can feature harmless imagery or something controversial, graphic, or explicit.
