Time to stock up on toothpaste, brushes and floss?

Key CDA Guidelines for Choosing a Toothbrush

Bristle Texture: Always choose soft bristles. Medium or hard bristles can wear down tooth enamel and cause gum recession over time.

Head Size: Select a compact size that fits your mouth easily, allowing you to reach back molars and tight spaces.

Manual vs. Powered: Both manual and power toothbrushes are effective if used correctly. Powered options (like validated Oral-B oscillating models) can help people who have limited hand movement or trouble brushing long enough.

The CDA Seal: Look for the CDA-Validated Seal or the American Dental Association Seal on packaging to ensure the product has been independently reviewed

DYK?

A healthy diet does more than fuel your muscles — it builds your teeth! 🥬 Nutrition is the foundation of oral health. Crunchy veggies act like natural toothbrushes, and calcium-rich foods keep your jawbone strong.

Feed your wellness from the first bite.

Stop rinsing after you brush! 💦

Rinsing with water immediately washes away the beneficial fluoride in your toothpaste. Just spit out the excess and let the fluoride do its job.

Bad breath? Look at your tongue. 👅

Bacteria loves to hide on the surface of your tongue. Give it a gentle brush or use a tongue scraper every time you brush to keep your breath fresh.

To the caregivers doing it all: We see you. 💙

When you're raising kids AND supporting aging parents, your own time is precious. Here are 3 quick ways to protect your family’s oral health without adding stress to your day:

Swap to Electric: Gift both your kids and your parents electric toothbrushes. It ensures a better clean with less effort, especially for little hands or arthritic joints.

Watch the Meds: Ask your parent's pharmacist if their medications cause dry mouth, and keep sugar-free lozenges or water nearby.

Don't Forget Yourself: You can't pour from an empty cup! Keeping your own dental checkups protects your health so you can keep showing up for them.

If you are caring for an aging parent, you might notice new changes in their health. But did you know their mouth can tell a big story? 🦷

As we age, oral health needs shift dramatically. If you're managing a parent's care, look out for:
1️⃣ Dry Mouth: Often caused by medications, it significantly increases the risk of cavities.
2️⃣ Gum Changes: Receding gums can expose roots to decay.
3️⃣ Dexterity Issues: Arthritis can make brushing and flossing difficult. Try an electric toothbrush or a floss holder to help them maintain independence.

Don't let oral care become an afterthought. The Manitoba Dental Association is here to help you navigate care strategies for your loved ones. Ask your dentist for a personalized care plan at their next visit!
