As our very senior hens continue to age, we wanted to make sure we had a flock health check done before coming into winter. Aside from being aging ladies our girl Greta was the only hen identified as needing medical intervention at this time. Greta has had a case of bumblefoot that has been difficult to treat. It seemingly went away for awhile but has come back. At this time we decided to put her on a few different antibiotics and restart her Epsom salt and hibitane foot soaks. We are hopeful that with prolonged treatment this time we can be successful for good. Greta hates taking her icky meds but falls asleep enjoying her warm soaks.

Our animals can be quite the mixed bag of medical issues but at least they always have each other’s backs… with a little help from the humans of course.

Last week Thumper, Dixie, and Sargent went to the vet together for exams.

Thumper needed a follow up urinalysis done to make sure her new urinary food is being helpful for some pesky crystals in her bladder. We are thankful that she is going in the right direction and was able to be spayed a few days later.

Dixie needed an x-ray of her front right leg as she has been sore on it for a few weeks. The x-ray was able to confirm that there is nothing fractured or broken and she most likely has a tendon or ligament that got pulled. Some continued pain management and lighter activity for 6-8 weeks should do the trick.

Sargent needed some bloodwork as he woke up feeling a little blah a few days ago. He didn’t come for his morning snuggle so we knew right away something was off. We were able to determine that he had a minor infection starting to brew, got him on antibiotics, and he started feeling back to himself within 24 hours.

Our vet visit for everyone was over 3 hours in clinic so the amazing vet staff let us all have a snooze together while we waited. Thumper was quite concerned that Dixie wasn’t awake for awhile after he sedated to x-ray as Dixie is her regular cuddle buddy at home.

We have 154 auction items and 39 still have no bids! 100% of auction proceeds are going directly to the astronomical veterinary bills we've accumulated in September and October. It's never too early to start Christmas shopping or to treat yourself!

Calvin the feral cat? We think not!

This story has a twist at the end so keep reading!

Calvin was trapped in Edmonton as a stray, feral cat and was later transferred to another partner rescue within the city. After spending some time in care, it became clear that Calvin was still quite fearful and shy around people. It was decided that he would be happiest spending the rest of his days at FARRM!

At FARRM, many feral and semi-feral cats are able to live comfortably on their own terms. With plenty of space to roam and the freedom to simply be cats, they receive all the care they need while enjoying minimal human involvement.

After a few weeks of decompressing and settling into his new digs in our cat house, we are absolutely thrilled to report that Calvin has made incredible progress! As you can see from the last photo, Calvin loves people. He just needed someone to give him a chance! We are so honored that this beautiful little fella has opened up his heart to the people at FARRM, we are excited for his future and all of the gentle pets coming his way.

If this post doesn’t get 1000 likes then I’m truly convinced the internet must be broken.

We have yet again been absolutely blown away by our local Wetaskiwin Home Hardware Distribution Centre. Not only did we spend an entire day last week picking up thousands and thousands of pounds of feed for our horses, sheep, and goats (enough to last the entire winter) but they also surprised us with a brand new washer and dryer!

Now let me tell you, for MONTHS we have not had a functioning washer and dryer. The sensor was gone in the dryer so it would only run for a few minutes before turning off, making getting through a load an entire day of work. Our washer was no longer draining properly and had to be drained by hand for the final 45 minutes of every cycle. This meant my morning coffee and evening relax time was spent sitting beside the washer on the floor filling bucket after bucket of dirty water and taking it to be dumped in the toilet. Oh, and on occasion the washer would leak and flood the entire laundry room… so that has been fun :/

I literally cannot tell you how much of a life changer this donation is for us. Not only do I get hours back in my day to focus on more important things, but the money we have saved not needing to buy as much feed and a new washer and dryer can go directly towards other critical endeavours like our barn build at the new property.

The staff and supervisors at our local Home Hardware deserve more than we can offer, but I am hoping in the spirit of Thanksgiving we can all give them a shout out, let them know how thankful we all are, and allow them to feel the true impact of their kindness and generosity. Recognizing local businesses and spotlighting their commitment to the community is how we continue to grow these partnerships.

We are thankful that our residents are able to live a life free from harm. As a grassroots sanctuary home to abused, neglected and unwanted animals we are honored and proud to be a safe place for our animals to land.

Caring for our animals is no easy feat because each and every resident requires and receives routine veterinary care, nutritious food, enrichment, and emergency veterinary care (if required). This year our annual online auction, Goats N' Ghouls is raising money directly towards some significant vet bills that came our way in September. You can help.

Our precious senior lady Ida is thriving in our care because of YOUR ongoing support - thank you FARRM family for supporting all of our endeavors. Take a moment to read about her courageous story and learn why your support is so vital.

Ida was surrendered by her owner who purchased her from the same working farm that many of our sheep come from. The agricultural animal laws in Alberta are very bleak; agricultural animals are entitled to food, water, shelter, and not much else. Despite our attempts to report this working farm that we receive many sick and dying sheep from, the animal laws in Alberta deem them to be following procedures; culling or surrendering the sick and dying sheep. However, Ida was sold as one of this working farm's “healthy sheep.”

Ida was exiting the farm's breeding program, as she was no longer producing desirable babies after likely years and years, and dozens of babies that were taken from her. Ida's new owner surrendered her to FARRM as her old age was making it difficult to keep her healthy and her body condition maintained. We welcomed Ida with open arms to provide a safe and peaceful place for her to live out her retirement.

Ida is a shy girl who has been through more than we can imagine. Ida is resilient, strong, and brave. Ida does not enjoy the company of people and likes her solitude. Although Ida loves her herd, she appreciates the tranquility of being off to the side and enjoying the soft sounds of the countryside. Ida spends her days lounging in the sun and looking after the younger residents.

Our annual Goats n' Ghouls online auction is live, and will run until Oct 16! We have over 150 lots and this year we've set a lofty goal of $10,000 as our vet bills are almost double that. We will always give our residents the care they need, but with a large number of them aging this means an increase in health issues, vet visits, and long-term medications. Seems the adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" doesn't apply to our residents, despite all the apple donations over the past couple months.

You’ll find heaps of unique items to bid on such as alcohol, adventure packages, home decor, art, jewelry, unique crafty creations, and so much more. There are items that will appeal to our Edmonton and Calgary supporters alike, so there's something for everyone no matter where you are in the province!

We also want to take a moment to thank the extraordinary donors who made this auction possible. Many are small businesses or individuals, and many are also repeat donors who come back year after year. Without them, there would be no auction, and we are so grateful for every contribution.
