💜 Her Name Was Jennifer P***k. She Was 45 Years Old. She Was a Mother of Two. And Her Life Was Taken by Intimate Partner Violence.

This past week a jury has found an Ajax man guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Jennifer P***k, who was killed on March 30, 2024.

Behind every story of femicide is a woman whose life mattered. A woman with family, friends, hopes, dreams and a future that was taken from her.

Jennifer was a mother of two sons. Our hearts are with her children, her family and everyone whose lives have been forever changed by her loss.

There are important aspects of this case that deserve our attention.

During the trial, the Crown described a history of jealous, controlling and abusive behaviour, calling Jennifer's murder "the final act of anger after months of jealous, controlling and abusive behavior."

The court also heard that Jennifer had shared her intention to end the relationship. She was murdered the day before that planned separation.

The defence argued that the accused was too intoxicated to form the intent required for murder. The jury rejected that defence, finding him guilty of second-degree murder. As the Crown stated, "Being intoxicated does not automatically equate to lack of intent."

These details matter.

We know that leaving an abusive relationship can be one of the most dangerous times for a woman. Jealousy, intimidation, possessiveness and coercive control are not expressions of love. They are forms of abuse that can escalate over time, making it critical that we, as a community, recognize these behaviours, understand the risks and ensure women have access to the support and safety they deserve.

At The Denise House, we understand the courage it takes for women to seek safety and support, and the many barriers they face when trying to leave an abusive relationship.

We must stop asking why women don't just leave and start asking how we, as a community, can better support them when they do.

💜 Jennifer deserved safety. She deserved to grow older. She deserved a future with her children.

We honour her memory by continuing to speak out against intimate partner violence, recognizing the warning signs and working toward a community where women and children can live free from violence.
