💙 Fun Fact Friday: Built on Community Spirit

Before Uxbridge Hospital opened its doors, the community was already working to make it possible. In 1954, a group of local nurses formed the Uxbridge Hospital Auxiliary with a goal of raising awareness and funds to bring a hospital to Uxbridge. With the support of local groups and donors, that vision became a reality when Uxbridge Cottage Hospital opened five years later.

More than 70 years later, the Auxiliary continues to play an important role in our hospital. Over 270 volunteers give their time to support patients and visitors while fundraising for equipment, technology and improvements to local care. Since inception, their efforts have contributed more than $6 million to the Uxbridge Hospital Foundation.

Now, the organization that helped Uxbridge build its hospital more than 70 years ago is helping Uxbridge build its hospital again. With a $1.5 million pledge toward the new Uxbridge Hospital, the Auxiliary is continuing a remarkable legacy of community support as we prepare for the next chapter of healthcare in Uxbridge.

We are incredibly grateful and thankful for their dedication to our hospital, our patients and our community. 💙

🏥 Great news for the future of healthcare in Ontario!

The Ontario government is providing over $10.9 million through 10 training initiatives to support nearly 2,000 workers and jobseekers in gaining skills for in-demand health-care careers across the province.

The projects will provide specialized training, work placements, mentorship and career supports for nurses, personal support workers, medical laboratory technologists and other critical health-care occupations.

As we look ahead to the redevelopment of Uxbridge Hospital, investments in Ontario’s health-care workforce are an important part of the bigger picture.

After all, building stronger health care means investing in both the places we receive care and the people who provide it. 💙

🏥 Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Ever wondered what the bronze structure in front of the Uxbridge Hospital is? It's the Recognition Tower!

The Recognition Tower is a tribute to the generous donors whose support has helped shape healthcare in our community. Standing 39 feet tall, it was created by artists Ron and Linda Baird, inspired by Uxbridge's original Bell Tower built in 1884, and was generously donated by Joey and Toby Tanenbaum. The tower was officially dedicated by the Rt. Hon. Roland Michener.

For more than 65 years, the Bell Tower served as both the town clock and fire alarm before being demolished in 1954 when no one came forward to restore it. Thankfully, its historic bell was preserved and can still be seen today at the Uxbridge Fire Hall on Brock Street!

Just as the original Bell Tower stood as a symbol of service to the community, the Recognition Tower stands as a symbol of the generosity that continues to support Uxbridge Hospital. As we work toward building a new Uxbridge Hospital, it reminds us that community support has always been, and will continue to be, the foundation of exceptional local healthcare.

BONUS FACT: The Recognition Tower is featured on the Uxbridge Art Tour, celebrating its place as both a public art installation and a meaningful piece of Uxbridge's history.

🏥 Happy Fun Fact Friday!

On January 12, 1959, Uxbridge Hospital first opened its doors after years of planning and community dedication.

Its story began years earlier when local residents recognized the need for healthcare close to home. In 1955, Dr. Graham Campbell along with his wife Emma purchased and donated the land where the hospital still stands today.

Originally named the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, it took its name from a model of small rural hospitals in England that provided essential care close to home.

Over the years, the hospital has evolved into Uxbridge Hospital, part of Oak Valley Health. Now, together with our community, we're helping build the next chapter: a new state-of-the-art Uxbridge Hospital that will serve generations to come.

💙 Stay tuned for more as we share the people, milestones, and stories that have shaped Uxbridge Hospital.
