Five folks came out on Saturday afternoon to look for spring wildflowers on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Luckily the forecast rain missed us, and we looked at how the blooms had progressed in the past two weeks.

Flower highlights included White Trilliums in full bloom, some pigment-challenged Red Trilliums, and puzzling over violet identification. Honorary mentions included some Barred Owl pellets with chipmunk skulls inside, hearing the pair of owls calling back and forth on the sunny afternoon, and finding a Gray Treefrog on the forest floor.

On Saturday some 30 or so naturalists joined Carly at the Uxbridge Countryside Preserve for sunrise sit to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with the dawn chorus. This event was put on in partnership with Bird Friendly Uxbridge. Upon following the signs down to the sit folks were welcomed with bagels and cream cheese at an open area near a treed pond where we set up folding chairs to listen.

We all became very familiar with the "ping pong ball" accelerating song of a nearby Field Sparrow, while a pair of ravens making trips back and forth all morning to a nest of hungry young was a treat. While a somewhat cool, quiet morning, other birds added voices to the soundscape, and a mid-morning walk to a nearby area yielded closer looks and listens of Blue-winged, Nashville, and Chestnut-sided Warblers among others.

And the end of the morning a portion of the group headed into town to the The Bridge Social Inc. for a warm beverage and chance to talk birds and other things.

All in all a nice morning out to celebrate northward migration. Spring is Springing!

This Saturday May 9, join us bright and early in Uxbridge to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by taking in the dawn chorus! We will sit in one location as day breaks and enjoy listening to the many voices of both local and migrant birds as they sing in preparation for the nesting season.

Put on by Bird Friendly Uxbridge and North Durham Nature, this relaxing outing will involve sitting in one place and listening to the singing birds during the birdiest time of day, and arguably the birdiest time of the year! Afterwards there will be coffee to wake up after the early start.

A group of 15 naturalists gathered with Mark in a mature forest on the Oak Ridges Moraine to look for the earliest spring wildflowers.

A chilly May day, it had been sprinkling snow earlier in the morning(!), and cloudy weather weather kept some of the blooms shy and half-closed. But the keen-eyed group spotted some parasitized green "White" Trilliums right out of the gate, and some early sedges gave us a dive into geekery very early on. Continuing on we scanned the forest floor for plants both flowering or not-yet-there, and over the 4 km loop tallied an impressive 17 species blooming and many others getting ready for later in the month. Along the way we discussed the adaptations that allow this guild of plants to survive and flourish during this brief spring window between the cold of winter and the shade of summer.

Great discussions were had, and a great afternoon out. Photos by Lynda Kamstra

Once again, North Durham Nature has funds available to sponsor youth aged 13 to 20 to attend one of three nature training camps for summer 2026. Last year, we sent one student to the Young Birders Camp operated by the Ontario Field Ornithologists. She shared her amazing experience with us at our October meeting. Sponsorships are also available for Birds Canada's Young Ornithologist Workshop and the Ontario Nature Youth Summit.

Please help us get the word out to any family with students that live in north Durham (Brock, Scugog, Uxbridge) with an interest in nature and environmental stewardship! Information on how to apply in the attached flier and on our website.

On Saturday fourteen cold-hardy naturalists joined Mark and Lynda on a chilly but clear and calm morning wildlife walk at the Secord Forest and Wildlife Area.

We had a very successful morning with tracks, trails, or signs of twelve mammal species including Red Squirrel tunnels and middens, tiny tracks of a Sorex shrew and larger mouse trails, numerous fresh Mink trails, groups of White-tailed Deer and Coyote, and an slide of a River Otter down a hill next to an old barn. Thanks to everyone who braved the chilly temperatures
