๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ

This month, we recognize and raise awareness about Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), a group of genetic conditions that affect the adrenal glands and hormone production.

Some people with CAH may also identify as inters*x, while others may not. Experiences and identities can vary from person to person, and it is important to respect how individuals describe themselves and their experiences.

Awareness helps improve understanding, support informed healthcare, and reduce stigma surrounding variations in s*x characteristics and hormonal development.

This month, we encourage continued learning, respectful conversations, and greater visibility for those impacted by CAH.

๐Ÿ“š Inters*x Canada was pleased to attend the Second Francophone Inters*x Research Days on May 21โ€“22, organized by RรฉFRI (Rรฉseau Francophone de Recherche sur lโ€™Inters*xuation).

Over two days, researchers, advocates, and inters*x people shared knowledge and experiences on a wide range of topics, including parents navigating medical decisions for their newborns in Burkina Faso, inters*x athletes, the physical and mental health of inters*x adults, 15 years of teaching inters*x well-being to clinicians in Switzerland, and the experiences of inters*x people participating in medical research.

The conference also featured presentations from Canadian researcher Janik Bastien Charlebois, as well as a powerful presentation from the first inters*x woman in Europe to successfully obtain a legal judgment against the medical team that subjected her to an experimental procedure as a minor. She shared her story alongside examples of her art-based activism and resistance.

An event open to the public was also held at a local bookstore to celebrate the release of the second edition of Inters*xes: Du pouvoir mรฉdical ร  l'autodรฉtermination by Michal Raz, written in collaboration with Loรฉ Petit. Loรฉ serves as a coordinator at CIA-OII France, a French inters*x advocacy collective.

Thank you to RรฉFRI and all presenters for creating a space for learning, dialogue, research, and community connection. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ

Inters*x people in Canada continue to face major gaps in visibility, healthcare access, and community support.

While some larger cities may have more specialized providers and resources, many people in rural, northern, and remote communities still experience barriers to informed care and connection.

Building trust, increasing education, and expanding access to inters*x-informed care are important steps toward creating safer and more inclusive systems across the country.

Inters*x Canada was proud to be present as an exhibitor at the 2026 PSAC National Equity Conferences, held from May 3โ€“7, 2026, in Winnipeg.

Mani, our Director of Administration was there to welcome attendees, answer questions, and share information about our current initiatives and the work we are doing.

Throughout the conference, we connected with people from different regions of Canada, handed out brochures, pens, pins, and tote bags, and had meaningful conversations about inters*x people, the importance of visibility, education, and inclusion.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, asked thoughtful questions, and helped us raise awareness about inters*x communities and the work of Inters*x Canada. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ Did you know?

Swyer Syndrome, also known as 46,XY complete gonadal dysgenesis, occurs when a person has XY chromosomes but the go**ds do not develop typically. People with Swyer Syndrome are usually born with typical female external anatomy and may not discover the variation until puberty.

Because the go**ds do not produce typical levels of hormones, puberty may not begin without medical support. Many people with Swyer Syndrome are raised as girls and identify as women, though experiences and identities can vary.

Inters*x variations like Swyer Syndrome are a natural part of human diversity. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ

May 17 โ€” International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT)

Today, we recognize this day as an important moment in the ongoing work toward equality, dignity, and human rights for all.

We acknowledge the progress made globally and within our communities, while also recognizing that discrimination, stigma, and barriers to care still exist.

We also recognize and honour 2SLGBTQIA+ activists who have led, and continue to lead, efforts to challenge discrimination and create change.

Together, we move forward with a shared commitment to respect, inclusion, and dignity for all.
