I think I may be inters*x... What should I do?

Many people don't learn they have an inters*x variation until later in life. Some begin asking questions because of differences in puberty, fertility, anatomy, chromosomes, or information uncovered during medical testing.

If you're wondering whether you may have an inters*x variation, you're not alone. While only a qualified healthcare professional can make a diagnosis, learning more about inters*x variations and connecting with trusted resources can be an important first step.

Remember that every person's experience is unique, and there is no single inters*x journey.

💛 Inters*x Variations: XY Anorchia 💜

This month, we're highlighting XY Anorchia, an inters*x variation in which a person has 46, XY chromosomes but no testicular (gonadal) tissue. It is also known as Testicular Regression Syndrome (TRS) or Vanishing Te**is Syndrome.

XY Anorchia may occur due to genetic factors or when the te**es regress during fetal development. Because the te**es produce hormones that influence s*xual development, the timing of this regression can affect the development of internal and external s*x characteristics, resulting in a range of physical presentations.

Without gonadal tissue, individuals with XY anorchia may not produce sufficient s*x hormones to undergo typical puberty on their own.

Like all inters*x variations, every person's experience is unique. Learning about the diversity of inters*x variations helps foster understanding, challenge misconceptions, and promote respectful, person-centred care.

💛 Activist of the Month: Kitty Anderson 💜

This month, we're recognizing Kitty Anderson, an Icelandic inters*x activist and human rights advocate whose work has helped advance inters*x rights across Europe and beyond.

Kitty is the co-founder of Inters*x Iceland, a long-time leader with OII Europe, and Chair of the Icelandic Human Rights Centre. Through her advocacy, she has worked to increase awareness of inters*x experiences, promote bodily autonomy, challenge medically unnecessary interventions on inters*x children, and advance the human rights of inters*x people.

Drawing on both lived experience and years of advocacy, Kitty has spoken before policymakers, human rights institutions, healthcare professionals, and community organizations, helping to foster more informed, respectful, and rights-based approaches to inters*x issues.

Thank you, Kitty, for your dedication to creating a world where inters*x people are respected, supported, and empowered.

🌍International Youth Day🌍

Today, on International Youth Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and leadership of young people around the world—including young inters*x people who are helping shape more inclusive, informed, and affirming communities.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to grow up in an environment where they are respected, supported, and empowered to thrive. For many inters*x youth, this means having access to accurate information, affirming healthcare, supportive families, inclusive schools, and communities where they can be themselves without stigma or discrimination.

At Inters*x Canada, we are committed to creating spaces where inters*x young people are heard, valued, and supported. Their voices, experiences, and leadership are essential to building a future grounded in dignity, inclusion, and human rights.

This International Youth Day, let's continue working together to ensure that every young inters*x person has the opportunity to live authentically and safely.

Do you have a story to tell, research to share, a workshop to lead, or creative work that inspires conversation?

We're inviting proposals for the Inters*x Canada Conference 2026: Our Bodies | Our Stories | Our Future.

We welcome presentations across six conference themes:

💛 Our Bodies – Health, wellbeing, bodily autonomy, and embodiment
💜 Our Stories – Identity, storytelling, culture, and visibility
💛 Our Communities – Care, belonging, leadership, and collective strength
💜 Our Rights – Advocacy, justice, and systemic change
💛 Our Future – Research, innovation, and emerging priorities
💜 Inters*x Voices Around the World – Global perspectives, solidarity, and community action

We recognize that knowledge takes many forms. Whether your proposal is rooted in lived experience, community practice, advocacy, research, education, or artistic expression, we'd love to hear from you.

We welcome a variety of presentation formats, including:

✨ Panel discussions
✨ Community dialogues
✨ Poster presentations
✨ Arts and cultural presentations
✨ Exhibits and resource showcases
✨ Alternative and innovative formats

We encourage submissions from inters*x community members, family members, researchers, healthcare providers, educators, artists, advocates, policymakers, community organizations, and international inters*x groups. We especially welcome proposals from Indigenous, Black, racialized, migrant, disabled, rural, remote, and other underrepresented inters*x community members and organizations.

MYTH vs. TRUTH

❌ Myth: There is only one inters*x variation.
✅ Truth: Inters*x is an umbrella term that encompasses many different innate variations in s*x characteristics, including chromosomes, hormones, go**ds, and reproductive or s*xual anatomy.

There is no single way to be inters*x. Inters*x people have diverse bodies, experiences, and healthcare needs. Some inters*x variations are identified at birth, while others may not be recognized until puberty or later in life.

Recognizing the diversity within the inters*x community helps challenge stereotypes and promotes more inclusive, person-centred care and support.

We are excited to welcome Dani to the Inters*x Canada team. With two decades of leadership experience in the charitable sector, Dani has dedicated her career to advancing social justice and equity. Her background includes fundraising, strategic planning, program development, and building meaningful relationships with organizations and communities across North America.

As an inters*x, disabled, and q***r person, Dani brings both professional expertise and lived experience to this role. She is passionate about supporting inters*x communities across Canada and looks forward to building on Inters*x Canada's momentum while working alongside our team, members, partners, and supporters to strengthen our impact. Outside of her work, Dani is a practicing multimedia artist with a love for animals.

Being inters*x is not a s*xual orientation or gender identity. Inters*x people have natural variations in s*x characteristics such as chromosomes, hormones, go**ds, or reproductive anatomy. Sexual orientation is about who a person is attracted to. Gender identity describes a person's internal sense of gender.

Some inters*x people identify as 2SLGBTQA+, while others do not. There is no single inters*x experience.

Understanding these distinctions can help promote awareness, respect, and inclusion for people of all identities and backgrounds.
