Partners In Health Canada We are a social justice and global health organization striving to make health care a human right. We refuse to accept that any life is worth less than another.

Partners In Health (PIH) was founded in 1987 to support a one-room health clinic serving a destitute squatter settlement in rural Haiti. PIH’s founders believed the conditions in the settlement — the crushing poverty, absence of modern health care and pervasive poor health — were not inevitable. These were social conditions subject to human intervention and so could be changed — in Haiti or anywhere in the world. PIH Canada opened our offices in 2011 to strengthen the work and add our voice to the Canadian movement for health as a human right. We bring the benefits of modern medicine to those who have suffered from the overt and subtle injustices of the world, in the past and in the present.

Two years ago, Peter J. Wallace came to J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital in Liberia looking for help with alcohol use. Today he’s 23, back in school, and helping lead the same peer support group that supported him. 

Liberia has about 10 psychiatrists for the whole country, and Dr. Helen Tedros Haile is one of them. She treated Peter and connected him to the Saturday group.

In 2025, Peter went back to school. He’s now in Grade 10 and working toward becoming an electrician!

As a peer educator, Peter helps lead sessions, talks about substance use in schools, and connects others to care. Peer educators also help reduce stigma in their communities. 

Archie, a nurse with Pih Liberia , built this program by visiting communities and listening first. The trust he earned is what the group grew from. 

Every session ends with lunch together! Young people now invite their friends to join, which shows how much the community trusts the group.

In 2026, PIH Sierra Leone staff came to learn from Liberia’s model. They’re now bringing it to Kono District and Freetown!

Two years ago, Peter J. Walalce walked into J.J. Dossen Memorial Hospital in Liberia looking for help with alcohol use. Today, he helps lead the peer support group that supported his recovery. 💛

Liberia has about 10 psychiatrists for the whole country, so in Maryland County, recovery happens in community. Every Saturday, young people come together to meet, talk, learn, and share lunch together.

The program is now growing in Sierra Leone too. 🌍

Last week, Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto received an anonymous $100-million gift for cancer care. A wonderful, extraordinary gift that will support lifesaving work. Meanwhile, that single gift is more than what many low-income countries have to spend on health from their own budgets over an entire year.  
 
That’s not right.
 
Patients everywhere deserve the same ambition we have for patients here.
 
In this time of manufactured scarcity for those who have the least, we need to keep proving it is possible to deliver on that ambition by working for a better distribution of global resources. And we will never build a world free of cancer, or free of any other disease, until we address this.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡

At Partners In Health Canada, we're committed to supporting Indigenous Peoples and honouring survivors of residential schools, along with their families and communities.

The ongoing impacts of colonialism also shape health, including access to care and who carries the burden of preventable illnesses. Tuberculosis continues to disproportionately affect Inuit communities, driven by inequities in housing, food security, and access to care.

We believe health is a human right. Upholding that right means listening to Indigenous voices, confronting racism in health care, and supporting Indigenous-led priorities and solutions.

Reconciliation demands action: today, and well past September 30th.

📝 Through workshops, collaborative sessions, and dialogues, 365+ Engagers and SPIHC advocates from 110 teams acquired the skills necessary to start the campaign year in their communities and on their campuses.

When funding for global health gets cut, the effects are far reaching.
