The Trans Lobby Group was founded in 2001 and its mission is to educate the public, the media, and politicians on the health care and political needs of trans people. In Ontario, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care announced restoring of funding for S*x Reassignment Surgery (SRS) on May 14

, 2008 following a lengthy campaign by the Trans Lobby Group to relist this medically necessary procedure. Since then, the Trans Lobby Group has advised the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care on the health care needs of trans people as a member of the SRS & Trans Health Policy Working Group. The Trans Lobby Group has also campaigned for explicit human rights protection in Ontario where Toby's Act to amend the Ontario Human Rights Code to include 'gender identity' has been introduced three times in the Ontario Legislature. On June 13, 2013 Toby's Act was adopted with all party support to protect trans people as a prohibited grounds of discrimination of 'gender identity' and 'gender expression'. In Federal Parliament, Bill C-389, an amendment to the Canadian Human Rights Act to include 'gender identity and expression' and to Hate Crimes legislation passed Third Reading February 10, 2011. Unfortunately the Bill died in Senate when the 2011 Federal Election was called. Its successor, C-279 was adopted in Parliament on March 20, 2013 and now goes to Senate for approval. The Trans Lobby Group is a non-partisan group with over 40 members including trans people, supporters, and allies. A smaller Steering Committee of trans people meets regularly to develop strategic direction and political actions relevant to our goals. The Trans Lobby Group, formerly a committee of the Rainbow Health Network which in turn was a Reference Committee of Coalition for Le***an and Gay Rights Ontario (CLGRO), acknowledges and honours their influence and mentorship on our development of liberation movement theory and practice as contrasted against rights theory and practice. The Trans Lobby Group was Pride Toronto's 2011 Honoured D**e March Group.

TRANS[FORMATION]: Digitizing historical Trans+ audiovisual materials: A community conversation about accessibility and risk

University of Victoria (UVic) Libraries is home to the world’s largest Transgender Archives, a joint project with the Chair in Transgender Studies. In 2024, UVic Libraries received a Digitizing Hidden Special Collections & Archives: Amplifying Unheard Voices grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to digitize, preserve, describe, and make accessible at-risk audio-visual items documenting histories of Trans+ activism throughout the 1970s-2000s. The two-year grant runs through to the beginning of 2027.

Cultural heritage organizations must navigate the ethically charged waters of protecting privacy while at the same time aspiring to openness and accessibility. These waters become increasingly challenging to navigate when today’s sociopolitical climate and technological advances are taken into serious consideration. Grappling with these ethical and practical tensions is at the core of the project, Trans(formation): Digitizing the Rikki Swin Institute Trans+ Activism and Outreach Media Collection. These tensions are of particular importance when creating digital collections of historical materials depicting Trans+ communities, whose survival throughout much of history has depended on the ability to keep their gender diversity hidden.

This conversation-based online workshop offers a structured forum for Trans+ community members and allies who have relevant professional expertise. The session will review the progress of the project and invite participants to advise on how to best balance offering appropriate accessibility to historical Trans+ audiovisual materials against the risks associated with making the materials publicly available.

Governments must do more to drive progress on trans rights across Europe and Central Asia!

New data from TGEU — Trans Europe and Central Asia 2026 Trans Rights Index & Map reveals a troubling reality for trans rights across Europe and Central Asia. While some countries continue advancing legal protections and self-determination laws, others are rolling back rights through anti-trans legislation, restrictions on legal gender recognition, and weakened anti-discrimination protections.

The report highlights a growing political and cultural backlash against trans communities, with rights increasingly tied to wider debates around democracy, human rights, and far-right influence across Europe. Despite important court victories and progress in some EU states, trans people across the region continue to face rising hostility, legal uncertainty, and barriers to healthcare, safety, and recognition.
