The Trans Lobby Group was founded in 2001 and its mission is to educate the public, the media, and politicians on the health care and political needs of trans people. In Ontario, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care announced restoring of funding for S*x Reassignment Surgery (SRS) on May 14

, 2008 following a lengthy campaign by the Trans Lobby Group to relist this medically necessary procedure. Since then, the Trans Lobby Group has advised the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care on the health care needs of trans people as a member of the SRS & Trans Health Policy Working Group. The Trans Lobby Group has also campaigned for explicit human rights protection in Ontario where Toby's Act to amend the Ontario Human Rights Code to include 'gender identity' has been introduced three times in the Ontario Legislature. On June 13, 2013 Toby's Act was adopted with all party support to protect trans people as a prohibited grounds of discrimination of 'gender identity' and 'gender expression'. In Federal Parliament, Bill C-389, an amendment to the Canadian Human Rights Act to include 'gender identity and expression' and to Hate Crimes legislation passed Third Reading February 10, 2011. Unfortunately the Bill died in Senate when the 2011 Federal Election was called. Its successor, C-279 was adopted in Parliament on March 20, 2013 and now goes to Senate for approval. The Trans Lobby Group is a non-partisan group with over 40 members including trans people, supporters, and allies. A smaller Steering Committee of trans people meets regularly to develop strategic direction and political actions relevant to our goals. The Trans Lobby Group, formerly a committee of the Rainbow Health Network which in turn was a Reference Committee of Coalition for Le***an and Gay Rights Ontario (CLGRO), acknowledges and honours their influence and mentorship on our development of liberation movement theory and practice as contrasted against rights theory and practice. The Trans Lobby Group was Pride Toronto's 2011 Honoured D**e March Group.

Established in 1979 by the Canadian Le***an and Gay Rights Coalition, Pink Triangle Day (which took place over the weekend on Feb. 14) commemorates a foundational legal victory for the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada: the acquittal of Pink Triangle Press on obscenity charges.

2026 marked the 47th anniversary of this Canadian tradition.

This quote from our recent event, “RHO In Conversation: Navigating Racism and Transphobia,” is a powerful reminder that gender-affirming care must be intersectional.

Jodi highlighted a critical gap: “A lot of care models that currently exist for gender-affirming care are developed based on the experiences of white trans people… which completely leaves out considerations for racialized trans folks.”

We will be sharing more insights from this conversation. Watch for more events coming in 2026.

A photograph of Tula (AKA Caroline Cossey) from S.H.A.F.T. vol. 2, issue 3. This issue also featured a transcribed interview, in which Tula expressed her feelings on her legal battle, and being outed publicly as a trans woman.

In her case, she fought for her right to marry, and to be legally recognized as a woman. Her legal battle continued for several years, eventually reaching the European Court of Human Rights. The right to change one's legal s*x was not granted in the UK until 2004 in the Gender Recognition Act.
