We take the time to reflect, learn and grow. We acknowledge the harm caused through years of oppression and denial.
The Argonaut Rowing Club welcomes us all to take a moment to acknowledge that we are gathered on the Treaty Lands of the Mississauga of the Credit First Nation, as well as the Traditional Territory of the Haudensaunee (hoe-D-no show-knee) and the Huron Wendat, who settled on the shores of Niigani gichigami, (nee-Ga-nee_gi-Chi-ga-me) the lake we now call Ontario.
For centuries these First Peoples were the custodians of this land and its waters, who thrived on its bounty and cared for, honoured and protected it for future generations. Today these lands, and their waters, are shared with many diverse First Nations, the Inuit and the Métis peoples, as well as many people and cultures from around the globe, who now call Aterón:to/Tkarón:to (At-eron-to/tK-aron-to) home; the place we’ve come to know as Toronto.
Given our sport, we also understand the importance of this great lake we have the privilege to row on; and the many rivers along its shores that feed it. We are grateful to Canada’s First Peoples for the opportunity to share these waters with them, as well as with all of you, all who came before and all who will enjoy them into the future. We acknowledge this and turn our minds to how we can best care for these waterways, in honour of and respect for the seven generations who came before us and for the benefit of the seven generations who will come after us and the benefit of all in our community.
