Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to honour the children who never came home from residential schools, the Survivors, and their families and communities.

As an interfaith organization, we carry a particular responsibility. Faith institutions helped run the residential school system, and we recognize the harm that was done in the name of religion. Reconciliation asks us to listen, to acknowledge that history honestly, and to act, including on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action 48 and 49, which are addressed directly to faith communities.

Our work caring for the Earth happens on lands that First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples have stewarded since time immemorial. Protecting creation cannot be separated from respecting Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and leadership over these lands and waters.

🕊️ As Yom Kippur begins, we reflect on renewal — for ourselves and for our planet.

This Day of Atonement calls us to look honestly at where we've fallen short and commit to doing better. For our interfaith community, that reflection extends beyond our relationships with one another to our relationship with the Earth we all share.

Just as Yom Kippur invites teshuvah — a "return" to our best selves — caring for our environment is its own act of return: to balance, to stewardship, to gratitude for the world we've been given.

To our Jewish friends and neighbours observing today: G'mar Chatimah Tovah — may you be sealed for a good year. 🍎🍯

As you fast and reflect, we hold space for that renewal to ripple outward — toward cleaner air, healthier land, and a more sustainable future for all of us, together.

Where Two Seas Meet: Season of Creation | Islamic History Month

When: October 4, 2:30-4:30 pm
Where: Mary Ward Centre, 70 St Mary Street, Toronto, ON M5J 1S3

Where Two Seas Meet brings together two faith observances that overlap this year.
The Season of Creation, an ecumenical Christian celebration held from September 1 to October 4, calls the faithful to reflect on the care for creation. October is also Islamic History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the contributions of Muslim communities to the country’s history and culture. Where Two Seas Meet marks the close of one and the height of the other in a single joint gathering.

The sacredness of water is the theme of this year’s Season of Creation. Our gathering will facilitate a conversation on this topic between an Islamic scholar/Imam and Sabrina Chiefari, a Catholic environmental educator.

Guests can also browse exhibitor tables and sample dishes that showcase Islamic, Christian and interfaith food traditions.

Today we celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, a figure deeply woven into nature — the cowherd who protected Vrindavan's forests, danced among the Yamuna's waters, and taught us that every leaf, flower, and drop of water (patram, pushpam, phalam, toyam) offered with love is sacred.

As we celebrate, we're reminded of Krishna's own reverence for the earth he called home. This Janmashtami, let's honour that spirit — plant a tree, reduce waste at your celebrations, or simply pause to appreciate the natural world around us here in Canada 🍁

At Faith & the Common Good, our work for environmental sustainability is rooted in humility — recognizing that Indigenous knowledge keepers have long understood what so many faith traditions also teach: that we are caretakers, not owners, of creation. Across our diverse faith communities, we're committed to listening, learning, and walking alongside Indigenous partners as we care for the earth we all share.

🌙 As the sun sets tonight, the Islamic lunar calendar turns the page to a new year — 1448 AH. Unlike many new year celebrations, this is a quiet moment: a time for reflection, gratitude, and fresh intentions rather than fireworks.

At Faith & the Common Good, this rhythm feels close to home. The Hijri calendar follows the moon's cycles — a reminder that, across traditions, we are part of something larger than ourselves, woven into the rhythms of nature that we're called to protect.

This year, we're especially grateful for the mosques and Muslim communities across Canada working with us and our partners at , and .nature.adventure to green their spaces.
