Documentary Organization of Canada

Documentary Organization of Canada The Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC) is the collective voice of independent documentary filmmakers across Canada.

As a national non-profit association it advocates on behalf of its members to foster an environment conducive to documentary production and strives to strengthen the sector within the broader film production industry. Since its inception as a political action group in 1983, DOC has continuously grown in numbers and influence. It has become a vigorous professional association, providing members wit

h an important network of peers and supporting their professional development through workshops, mentorships, master classes and screenings. Now representing over 1,100 directors, producers and craftspeople belonging to seven regional chapters, DOC endeavors to shape policy favorable to documentary production and distribution. In addition the association implements concrete, pragmatic initiatives like its Insurance Program to help lower costs of production in the case of the former and assist in distribution with the latter.

๐Ÿ“ข Call for Applications!

Our friends at Story Money Impact have a call for applications open for their program, STORY TO ACTION. They'll select three documentary films that address pressing social and environmental issues and support those projects with the creation of impact strategies, outreach to community partners, and the hosting of screenings and panels with the goal of using the film as a tool to create positive change.

โญ Great news!

Weโ€™re excited to partner with imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival for a special screening of What We Carry, preceded by the World Premiere of The Orange Flower.

What does reconciliation look like for the descendants of a residential school teacher?

In WHAT WE CARRY, Katrinka and her daughter Bracken open a trunk of memories belonging to Katrinkaโ€™s mother, Jennifer Notley, an English school teacher who answers a call for a position at Desmarais (St. Martinโ€™s) Residential School in Treaty 8 territory. Their discovery leads them on a journey to meet with community members of the Bigstone Cree Nation, many of whom attended St. Martinโ€™s, as they seek a fuller understanding of the impacts of residential schools, and Jenniferโ€™s place within that history.

Jessie Anthonyโ€™s debut documentary feature provides a fresh perspective on reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, with many challenging but much needed discourses on privilege, accountability, and healing.

Preceding the feature is THE ORANGE FLOWER, a poignant short film by Selah Rayne that explores the legacy of residential schools through the eyes of a child.

The CRTC has eliminated the Programs of National Interest (PNI) framework โ€” a longstanding policy that helped ensure investment in Canadian documentary, drama, and childrenโ€™s programming.

The Commission says its new system will support Canadian stories through ownership requirements, discoverability obligations, and streaming investment.

But public-interest documentary has never been sustained by market forces alone.

At a moment when documentary financing and production are already under significant pressure, DOC is deeply concerned that the Commission has removed direct genre protections without clearly explaining how public-interest documentary production will remain sustainably supported under the new framework.

Documentary is not simply an โ€œat-risk genre.โ€ It is essential cultural and democratic infrastructure tied to civic memory, public accountability, regional expression, and Canadian cultural sovereignty.

DOC will continue engaging with creators, allied organizations, policymakers, and sector partners to fight for the continued viability of public-interest documentary.
