Ricky Jackson lost 39 years, 3 months, and 9 days of freedom due to a wrongful conviction that changed his life forever.

He was just 18 when convicted in Cleveland in 1975 based on testimony from Eddie Vernon, who was 12 years old at the time of the 1975 crime. With no physical evidence, the case fell apart. After nearly four decades, he was exonerated and released on November 21, 2014.

Jackson served the longest wrongful imprisonment of any exonerated defendant in U.S. history. He received state compensation and settlements totaling several million dollars, but nothing can replace the lost time with family. Instead of bitterness, Jackson chose forgiveness. His story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of justice.

Numerous Black people have been murdered by law enforcement, but this murder was different. It awakened the world like it hadn't ever before. Today in Shreveport, Louisiana, a home became the scene of a devastating loss that has shaken an entire community. Eight children… Just babies, ages 1 to 14… All gone. Authorities say the person responsible was someone they trusted most — a father now accused of taking the lives of his own children before fleeing the scene. The situation escalated into a police chase that ended with his death. But the pain doesn’t stop there… Their mother, Shaneiqua Elkins, is still alive — injured, hospitalized, and fighting for her life. A mother now facing the unimaginable…

Today marks 27 years since 13 people were shot and killed and 21 others were wounded at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

This tragedy continues to have long-lasting impacts. Just last year, another victim died from her injuries sustained in the shooting.

Today and always, we’re holding the victims, survivors, and the Columbine community in our hearts as we work to build a future where our kids can be safe at school.
