With unanimous support, the motion to ‘Expand Cooling Requirements and Cooling Amenity Spaces in Apartment Buildings’ PASSED at Mississauga City Council! 🎉🙌

Mississauga-Cooksville Chair Marcia Bryan reminded councillors during ACORN's delegation that indoor cooling is not a luxury. It is about basic human survival. Let's not forget that two weeks ago it was 48 degrees outside. 🔥

Peel ACORN is hopeful that the review process that starts now will get Mississauga tenants closer to victory in our fight to . 🌡️☀️

We will keep the pressure high 📈 to make sure this is a priority before next summer (and for the upcoming election 🗳️). Peel ACORN is organizing for:

⚠️A Maximum Heat By-law: Landlords must be legally required to keep apartments below 26°C all summer. We have rules for winter heat, so we need rules for summer cooling.

❄️A Local Free AC Program: Mississauga must follow other cities and set up a program to get free cooling units directly to tenants who need them.

Environment Canada 🌲🔥 in CBC says: "One of the ways people try to keep cool is by opening windows at night if they don't have air conditioning. But if the air quality is bad, you have to choose your battles. They definitely have a worsening effect when combined together.

Wildfire smoke can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and coughing. More serious symptoms include wheezing, chest pain and severe coughing."😷

Now imagine if you have asthma, COPD or another respiratory condition. Imagine if you're elderly or have young kids and you can't afford AC? 👵👶

While cities across Ontario are stepping up to protect low-income and heat vulnerable tenants, FordNation 's inaction is putting their health and safety at risk ⚠️.

While wealthy politicians like Premier Doug Ford relax in their fully air-conditioned cottages, Ontario renters are told to suffer in the heat and smoke 🥵💨.

If corporate landlords refuse to keep our homes safe, the politicians at Queen’s Park need to step up and foot the bill. Ontario ACORN is demanding:

❄️Free AC units: Fund a province-wide program to provide free, energy-efficient air conditioners to low- and moderate-income renters.

🛑💸 Stop the price gouging: Ban landlords from charging extra fees for air conditioning to tenants who have utilities included in their rent.

⚡ Expand energy support: Immediately expand the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) to fully cover any extra AC surcharges forced onto tenants.

☀️📈 Increase summer relief: Increase the OESP hydro credit during the summer months to account for higher rates while running AC.

While FordNation vacations at his cottage in the Muskokas, 44% of tenants struggle to survive without air conditioning. ❌🔥

⚠️ Extreme heat takes more lives than any other kind of severe weather. Another summer of inaction means more preventable deaths.

When the BC heat dome of 2021 claimed 600+ lives, the government responded by handing out 8,000 free air conditioning units. ❄️

Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Canada. Yet, ACORN's national survey of 700 tenants last year found that 44% of renters don't have AC with the most common reason being how expensive it is.

To make things worse, as of today, Doug Ford’s new air conditioning rules under Bill 97 are officially in effect. Now, if your rent includes utilities, landlords can charge extra, unproven fees for having AC.

No notice. No approval from the LTB. Just arbitrary estimates to guess your hydro usage and squeeze extra profit out of your rent check. 💸

Instead of holding landlords accountable for keeping our homes safe, Doug Ford is forcing low-income tenants to choose between heat stroke or getting behind on rent and facing eviction.

How many preventable deaths will be excused during this week's heat domes?

We're not being dramatic - tenants are literally fighting for their lives.

In 2021, when over 600 people died in BC during a heat dome (98% died indoors without adequate cooling) the government responded by committing 8,000 free AC units to low-income tenants.

If corporate landlords refuse to provide cooling, Queen's Park needs to step up and foot the bill. ACORN is demanding:

✅ Free AC units for low-to-moderate income and heat vulnerable tenants
✅ Ban landlords from charging extra fees for air conditioning to tenants who have utilities included in their rent.
✅ Immediately expand the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) to fully cover any extra AC surcharges forced onto tenants.
