The Zombies are getting ready for Halloween weekend!
With only a few days remaining before the flash mobs kick into high gear be sure to book our zombie dancers and have them show up at your workplace, school, party or community event! All you need to do is fill out this form and book a visit between October 30 and November 1.

DANCE IMPROVISATION PRACTICE IS TOMORROW!!!

Join us this Wednesday for a special Dance Improvisation Practice. We’re encouraging all visual artists especially those from Group of 77 to come observe and explore drawing bodies in motion.

Wednesday, 21 October
6:30–8:30 p.m.
Arts & Culture Centre, St. John’s dance studio above the old gallery
Free, drop-in (no commitment required)

Prefer to move? Dancers and movers of all experience levels are invited to participate in these weekly dance improvisation practices. Wear comfortable clothing; knee pads are recommended.

All bodies, backgrounds and identities are welcome. Together, we’ll respond moment by moment to ourselves and to each other. Creating a space grounded in consent, care and respect.

We at NDW, in partnership with First Light, are happy to announce that Barbara Penney is this year's Indigenous Dancer in Residence.

Barbara, whose deep love for her Inuit culture shows up in her daily work and her creative passions alike, can often be found working on her beadwork and embroidery skills, as well as designing Inuit clothing, or sharing a kind moment with members of her community who come to First Light seeking support. Having worked at First Light for three years, she has continually grown her skills and her community connections, while learning traditional Inuit drum dancing along the way, thanks to many mentors and knowledge holders in her community.

For the 2026 Spirit Song Festival Barbara plans to share the stage with her mentee, MB, who is also seeking to thrive creatively through their expression of culture. MB is an up-and-coming artist, proudly learning and sharing their culture as an Inuk. Thanks to their mentor, Ashley Dicker, Barbara and MB continue to hone their skills and grow their creative expressions through performance. The hope is that this sharing of knowledge and experience can continue to light the fire of inspiration, so these important traditional practices continue to be passed on to future generations.

We are so excited to introduce our 2026 Roberta Thomas Legacy Award Recipient: Joël Azevedo ()

Joël is a contemporary dance artist based in Corner Brook, NL / ktaqmkuk. Their practice spans choreography and performance, dramaturgy and stage management, and more recently administration and producing. They lead with curiosity and love unknotting knots, whether fibrous, logistical or creative. Their practice is firmly rooted in contemporary dance and dance-theatre, but their research and training also includes forms like karaoke, zumba, social dance, and arts leadership - as well as being influenced by clowning and devising. Joël gravitates toward collaborative and community-engaged processes.

This 2026 Roberta Thomas Legacy Award supports the development of a template for “dancing autobiographies”; a creative framework inviting people to explore and communicate their stories, memories, pleasures, fears and hopes through movement. The project grows from Joël’s interest in dance as a form of communication beyond spoken language and their commitment to accessibility, collaboration and community engagement. The award will support initial research and development with collaborators in Corner Brook, NL.
