Parks Canada employees across the county, and in Newfoundland and Labrador received notices that they could be losing their jobs. That’s 142 people here at home who don’t know if they'll have a job anymore. Many of those workers are in the rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

At a time when we are telling tourists to come and discover our province and investing in tourism, the federal government hacks away at our national parks.

We stand in solidarity with these workers and we are disgusted. NAPE views this as an attack on our province, our workers and particularly rural NL.

It's not lost on us that this is coming at the same time the federal Liberal government is also ramming through a Bill taking away federal employees right to strike.

NAPE has written all federal MPs from the province to stand up for these workers, for our province and to reverse this decision.

As the federal government agency launches a workforce adjustment exercise thanks to budget cuts, more than half of Parks Canada employees in Newfoundland and Labrador have been told they could lose their jobs.

Eastern Shop Steward Education Levels 1 & 2 kicked off today with a full room of dedicated Union Activists! NAPE’s goal is to provide this training to all our Shop Stewards across the province.

Shop Stewards are your first line of defence, as they are responsible for enforcing contracts, handling grievances, ensuring worksite safety, mobilizing members for political campaigns, orienting new members to the worksite and NAPE.

The Liberals had a chance today to protect the right to strike. Instead, they voted against it.

Now they’re pushing ahead with Bill C-39, which would give ministers even broader powers to shut down legal strikes.

Shame.

Canada’s unions extend our thanks to Leah Gazan for introducing this bill and having workers’ backs.

Biggest of Congratulations to Francine Lake of Local 6233 for her retirement on Sept 30th, 2026.

Francine has provided 28 years of service to so many disciplines within the Community Support Program of NLHS, and while the program and organization have changed over the years, Francine's dedication surely has not.

As a Clerk IVa, Francine's support, leadership, and guidance have made a significant impact on so many.

Francine, while we are wishing you a well-earned retirement filled with nothing but relaxation and joy, you sure will be missed.

NAPE is proud to support the work of Heroes Mending on the Fly Canada!

Today, Secretary Treasurer, Trevor King presented Mark Whitty, the Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Coordinator for the East zone of Heroes Mending on the Fly with a cheque for $1500.00.

Heroes Mending on the Fly is a registered non-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting active and retired Military Personnel, RCMP members and first responders who have experiences physical and/or psychological injuries because of their service to Canada. This cause is a very dear one to NAPE who represents many frontline workers including Paramedics and Wildland firefighters. We were thrilled to meet Mark who is also a Primary Care Paramedic and NAPE member!

NAPE’s LPN Committee is at NUPGE Nursing Meeting!

LPN Committee members Aiden Donahue, Vicki Hancock (BOD), Jenay King and Jill Miller, along with Membership Servicing Officer Scott Mercer, are attending the National Union of Public and General Employees Nursing Meetings. Trista McGrath, a valued member of the LPN committee member wasn’t able to attend.

Day 1 brought together representatives from six provincial components for engaging conversations about the common challenges facing LPNs across the country.

Key issues included recruitment and retention, expanding roles and responsibilities, wage disparities, travel nursing, privatization, workplace culture, burnout, and work-life balance. Participants also discussed how unions can work collectively toward solutions.

Day 2 will focus on workplace violence, an issue whose prevalence and impact deserve a dedicated day of discussion.

Respiratory Therapy Week – October 25 to 31

This week we recognize Respiratory Therapists for the care they provide patients at all stages of life.

Respiratory therapists are specialists in cardiorespiratory care and are essential to the provision of care across our healthcare systems.

Respiratory therapists provide life-saving treatments including oxygen therapy, airway management and mechanical ventilation for patients who are no longer able to breathe for themselves.
