As of 12:00 PM on March 20, we received the Labour Relations Board’s decision outlining the reasons for rejecting, in full, AAHP leadership’s application to become the sole bargaining unit for health professionals in the province.

You can read the reasons for the decision from the LRB here https://nape.ca/6326-2/

While the application was rejected, this does not necessarily end the process. A revised application may be submitted by either of the parties and it is also likely that a province-wide vote will take place to determine representation.

In the meantime, our priority remains unchanged. We are focused on public sector bargaining and securing a strong collective agreement for you.

If you have any questions around the Labour Boards reasoning or about the process, please reach out to [email protected]. We are here to help answer any and all questions you might have.

Thank you for your patience, engagement, and professionalism.

March is SOCIAL WORKERS MONTH! We get to take this month to recognize and celebrate our social workers who create lasting change within the communities of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Often unseen, the work that our social workers do in these communities is crucial to overall health and wellness and with this being the 100th anniversary (CASW), we celebrate and are grateful for the organized social work in Canada!

This year's Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) theme is "Reflecting on our Past, Reimagining our Future".

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Theme is: "Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform."

Social workers address systemic injustices and also promote social justice and human dignity. This month, let's take time to say "THANK YOU!" to a social worker in our community as, together, we also focus on how our social workers advocate for the mental health of our province's population.

If you are a social worker, this month, we want to celebrate YOU!

NAPE negotiating teams are meeting to discuss Public Sector Bargaining in this province, with several key groups already discussing key local and general issues.

Recruitment and Retention is highlighted and brought forward by NAPE President, Jerry Earle. In addition, he has pointed out several key concerns brought forward, including workload issues, safety issues, and dealing with vacancies.

Local issues are of key concern, affecting thousands of workers daily in the workplace. In addition, there are general issues that must be discussed to ensure that we retain our valuable members and thereby, the valuable services required in our province.

The problems have to be recognized by this government to ensure that the necessary solutions are put in place to protect our workers.

NTV covers this in more detail, below:

Members have been seeking clarification regarding the Notice.

Please be aware that the Notice period is not decided by a Union but is outlined in legislation.

Article 14 from the Public Service Collective Bargaining Act states:

Renewal, revision, etc. of collective agreement

14. (1) Within a period of not more than 60 and not less than 30 days immediately before the date of expiration of the term of a collective agreement or a judgment, either party to the collective agreement or affected by the judgment may by written notice require the other party to start collective bargaining with a view to the renewal or revision of an existing collective agreement or the conclusion of a new collective agreement.

(2) Where a collective agreement provides for a period of notice to start collective bargaining that is different from the period provided for in subsection (1), the provision in the collective agreement shall apply.

NAPE is bound by this legislation and cannot stop the bargaining process from happening.

There will be further opportunities to hear directly from NAPE, review the contracts, and ask questions.

Sharing this recent post by NL Health Services. We recognize the hard work of our members, including all members along with Board member Meghan Whittle, seen here. Congratulations on reaching this milestone! 🎉

NL Heath Services marks five years of FDG production in the province!

The radiopharmaceutical sciences (RPS) team performed its first clinical production of a radiopharmaceutical on-site in November 2020. This radiopharmaceutical called 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (commonly referred to as FDG) is used in PET scans for the diagnosis and management of many different types of cancer. Since this time, RPS has achieved over 700 clinical productions of FDG, with approximately 9,000 patients receiving the locally produced radiopharmaceutical for their PET/CT scan.

Kudos to all staff and health-care professionals who have been involved in reaching this milestone!

As a proud sponsor of this third annual event, NAPE wants to thank all who attended the Psychology Day event recently.

Psychologists and Psychometrists also attended from all zones across the province, and included:

• Eastern Urban and Rural Zones: 30 Psychologists and 1 Psychometrist
• Central Zone: 3 Psychologists
• Western Zone: 5 Psychologists and 2 Psychometrists
• Labrador-Grenfell Zone: 1 Psychologist

Each region spent time engaged in team-building exercises. With many Psychologists within NLHS working as the sole Psychologist on their team, and with most meetings being held virtually, this was an invaluable opportunity to connect in person.

Fittingly, the day ended with “John’s Hour" - a time for an informal debrief, consult, and sometimes even a cry with colleagues who understand. 🫂

*Special shout out to Chandler, a Psychology Assistant at Correctional Health Services! 🐶
