Opposition Education Critic MHA Bernard Davis visited MUNFA today to discuss budget estimates and governance issues at Memorial University.

MUNFA will continue to work with all parties in the House of Assembly to ensure the only university in Newfoundland and Labrador remains comprehensive and continues to serve as a hub of opportunity for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Budget 2026 brings welcome relief for students facing affordability challenges at Memorial – but a decade of provincial underfunding has left the University with lost programs, reduced course offerings, and a growing infrastructure crisis. Today’s budget offsets lost tuition revenue. It does not close that gap. The only university in Newfoundland and Labrador needs sustained investment. MUNFA is calling on government to make the multi-year commitments Memorial needs.

In 2024, Premier Tony Wakeham said abandoning Memorial University and telling it to 'go fix your problems' was 'not good enough.' These are his own words, on the record with CBC. Budget-2026 (on April 29) is his chance to prove he believed them.

A 2021 KPMG economic impact assessment found that Memorial University contributes over $600 million to Newfoundland and Labrador’s GDP every single year, supporting nearly 10,000 jobs, attracting students from around the world, and generating billions in long-term economic value through its graduates.

The economic case for investing in Memorial hasn’t weakened, but the province’s commitment has.

It’s time for the provincial government to act accordingly.

MUNFA President Dr. Lisa Moores and other Executive member’s met with Minister of Education Paul Dinn today to talk about what is happening at Memorial University.

Course sections are disappearing. First-year Math Class sizes have grown by 67%. Teaching Term Appointments are being cut without consultation. Students are losing access to the courses and supports they need to succeed.

While government spending has increased by roughly 40% over the past 10 years, MUN has absorbed a 10% cut. The people paying the price are students and the faculty who teach them.

MUNFA will keep bringing these facts to the people who need to hear them. The only university in Newfoundland and Labrador deserves stable, adequate funding.

Governments across Canada are stabilizing post-secondary education with new investments. Ontario committed $6.4B. Saskatchewan locked in a 4-year funding agreement.
At NL's only University, we're already seeing the consequences of chronic underfunding: job losses, fewer courses, growing class sizes.
The NL budget is coming. This government has a choice to make.

Across Memorial, we are seeing the real impacts of ongoing funding cuts. Programs are changing. Jobs are being lost. Teaching and learning conditions are under pressure.

The impacts are not abstract. They affect our classrooms, our colleagues, and our students.
MUNFA members know that underfunding does not strengthen universities or the communities they serve. Accepting decline is a choice and we are choosing to speak up.

That is why we are asking members to take part in the campaign.
