August 1st is Emancipation Day in Canada

On August 1st, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British empire, including what is now Canada, after being passed by the British Parliament. In 2021, the House of Commons voted to officially designate August 1st as Emancipation Day, a day to reflect upon and learn about systemic racism and slavery in Canada, and to celebrate the perseverance, strength, and achievements of Black Canadians.

May is Museum Month, and to celebrate, Mayholme is participating in the MoNA Museum Month Passport.

Collect five stamps on your passport from participating MoNA museums or institutions, and your name will be entered to win prizes!

Our volunteers are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Come collect your stamp by June 1st!

May is Museum Month, and we're celebrating with a fun and rewarding way to explore the incredible museums, art galleries and archives across Niagara! Pick up your Passport at a participating MoNA (Museums of Niagara Association) location. Then, visit other participating institutions throughout the month of May. For every place you attend, you'll receive a stamp on your passport. Collect five stamps by June 1st, and you'll be entered for a chance to win a fantastic prize. It's the perfect opportunity to discover new spaces, revisit your favourites, and experience the rich history and culture our region has to offer.

Take your pick from at least five of these wonderful organizations in the Niagara Region: Welland Historical Museum, Fort Erie Historical Museum, Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum, Welland Central Fire Hall, Fort Erie Railway Museum, Nelles Manor Museum, St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, Niagara Railway Museum, Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, Mayholme Foundation Historical and Genealogical Research Centre, Niagara Falls History Museum, RiverBrink Art Museum, and Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre.
