Did you know that Mayholme and the surrounding property is allegedly haunted?
In 2024, Mayholme Foundation founder, Corlene Taylor, wrote the following about the “dip” in Ontario street beside the Mayholme property.👇
“The dip or hollow at Mayholme was said to be haunted and was well known to the Port Dalhousie teamsters, who used to move ships up and down on the tow paths through the old canal, now the Henley Regatta course. As night fell, if they were close enough to Port along the route, they would return there in order to stable and feed their horses, and would go home for the night. The story is that they would not come back alone but would wait until there were several teams returning. The shortest and quickest way to return was down the old road from town to Port, now Ontario Street. They would come down to almost the dip, then, they would drop their traces and, shouting and hollering, would race through the dip as quickly as possible to get to safety, the other side, and then home.
As a kid I was fascinated by the story and spent many evenings in anticipation there. Who, or what would appear in the hollow? Perhaps a headless lady on a white horse, or something else?
Several years ago, a lady, younger than I, came into Mayholme and somehow, we got to talking about “the ghost”. As kids, we used to ride our bikes everywhere, and she had either been coming from or going to Port in the late afternoon or early evening, when she noticed something in the valley and realized that it looked like a flying saucer. She observed it for a while as it hovered and flew along the valley opposite the farm (Mayholme). She said that she had never told anyone about it, because she did not think anyone would believe her.”
“The “dip” was known as May’s Hollow and was noted in the early newspapers as such several times. By 1920, when the paving of Ontario street was being reported, it was noted that they had gotten as far as Dwyer’s Hollow. The watercourse here was never named to my knowledge.”
