Some love stories come with flowers and chocolates. This one comes with a spectacular underbite, questionable hairstyles, and two little dogs who refuse to do life without each other.
Meet Rocky and Danica. Two scruffy terrier-type dogs who look like they've spent the last several years standing directly in front of a very powerful fan. Rocky, in particular, has an underbite that deserves to be studied by scientists. We don't know how he manages to look permanently confused, mildly offended, and absolutely adorable all at the same time, but he's perfected the art.
Rocky and Danica were adopted from HSGN, and we hoped their story had already found its happy ending. Unfortunately, life had other plans, and recently, these two best friends found themselves back in our care. But while Rocky arrived sporting his signature collection of unruly facial hair, Danica was in heartbreaking condition.
Danica was severely emaciated, her diabetes was uncontrolled, and she was critically ill. To put it simply, we were terrified we might lose her. This little girl had become so sick that we weren't sure how much fight she had left.
Turns out, we underestimated a tiny, scruffy pup with absolutely no intention of leaving her best friend behind.
With round the clock veterinary care, treatment, and plenty of TLC, Danica has been slowly finding her way back. She's getting stronger, and every little improvement feels like a victory. She still has a journey ahead of her, but the fact that we're now talking about finding her a home instead of wondering whether she'd survive is something pretty special.
And through it all, there's Rocky. Her best friend, her partner in crime, and quite possibly the only dog in existence who can make an underbite look like a fashion statement. We can't tell you what these two talk about when nobody's listening, but we imagine it's mostly Danica making the decisions and Rocky agreeing because he wasn't really paying attention anyway.
They're a package deal. Two little weirdos, one enormous friendship, and absolutely no interest in being separated.
Now comes the part where we ask for something big.
Danica has diabetes, which means her future family will need to be comfortable managing her medical needs, including insulin, a consistent routine, monitoring, and ongoing veterinary care. Rocky and Danica would also do best in a home without other dogs, where they can enjoy a quieter life together.
We know. Two dogs, one with ongoing medical needs, and a home without other dogs. We're not exactly making this easy on ourselves.
But neither is love, sometimes. Somewhere out there is a person who won't be scared away by insulin injections or a little extra responsibility. Someone who understands that a medical condition doesn't make an animal any less deserving of a wonderful life. Someone who will learn Danica's routine, cheer her on as she continues to recover, and look at Rocky's ridiculous little face every morning and wonder how on earth they got so lucky.
Someone who won't see a complicated adoption. They'll see two dogs who have already lost their home once and deserve the comfort of knowing they won't have to do it again.
And maybe, just maybe, they'll even invest in a hairbrush. Although we suspect Rocky's hair is beyond the help of modern science.
We wish we could explain to Rocky and Danica that we're trying to find them something wonderful. That somewhere out there, a person might be reading this very post and realizing that their home has room for two scruffy little souls. That the hard part of their story might finally be behind them. But we can't explain any of that to them. All we can do is keep caring for them, keep Danica moving in the right direction, and hope the right person finds their way to us.
So here's our ask. If you have room in your home, room in your heart, and a willingness to learn a little about diabetes, we'd love for you to meet Rocky and Danica. And if you can't adopt, please share their story. Somewhere out there is a person who needs two scruffy little dogs just as much as these two need them.
