We are re-imagining no-kill rescue by operating Canada’s largest cat sanctuary, an adoption centre, a full-service non-profit animal hospital + urgent care, and thrift stores. The Regional Animal Protection Society runs the largest cat sanctuary in North America, an adoption centre, a full-service animal hospital, two thrift stores and hopes to open a dog sanctuary in the near future.

In addition to caring for your furry family members, the RAPS Animal Hospital exists to provide medical services for the animals in the care of the Regional Animal Protection Society. RAPS operates the RAPS Cat Sanctuary, an adoption centre, a fostering network and three social enterprise Thrift Stores.

Many of the feral cats who come to us quickly vanish into the back of the Cat Sanctuary. Socializing them can sometime be a long-term prospect. So it's been a joy to find a couple of boys who came to us in June from Prince George deciding that it's worth braving contact to enjoy the benefits of life with humans.

Sigh. We are STILL searching for the purrfect adopters for our most amazing boys, Jupiter & Pluto.

These sweethearts are now 7 months old and have been in our care for 4.5 months. 💔

Words simply cannot convey how incredibly loving, affectionate and sweet these two are. We KNOW they're going to fill their lucky adopters' hearts and home with more love than they could ever imagine. ❤️

We understand that adopting a special-needs pair might feel intimidating. But here's what we want you to know: while Jupiter and Pluto are wobbly, their needs really aren't that demanding!

We're at Bosley's Steveston Village from 2 - 4 pm on Sat Oct 24 with these adoptable cuties - Eeyore, Piglet & the only female in the litter, Kanga. Mama Winnie was trapped as a pregnant stray by our team and birthed five littles in the comfort of our foster volunteer's home. They are now 11 weeks old, full of beans, affection and energy and are in search of their purrfect people.

We adopt kittens in pairs & consider singles into homes that already have a well-matched kitten or cat.

🐱 14 NEW KITTENS = 14 CANS OF FOOD A DAY! 🥫

Yesterday, 14 teenage kittens arrived at RAPS, transported in style by our friends at Sky Whisker from our rescue partner at Shuswap Paws! 💚💙

These lovely, mostly shy kitties need our help learning to trust humans as we prepare them for adoption and the wonderful homes they deserve. 🏡

But growing kittens have BIG appetites! 😻 We’re always in need of canned kitten food to keep up with our growing crew.

In addition to this new crew of kittens, we have another 50 kittens available for adoption, nearly available for adoption and those in our foster network who are too little yet or receiving socialization. That's a lot of tiny mouths to feed! 🐈🐈‍⬛

In this week’s blog post, volunteer Brigid Coult introduces Ursula, a 7-year-old girl who was transferred into our care from a rescue partner in Kamloops 6 years ago. She was among many colony cats living in very unsafe conditions… this is a common way cats who now call the sanctuary forever home, come to us. 🐾

“The Double Wide deck at the Cat Sanctuary is an ideal halfway home for cats emerging from cages (spay/neuter, vaccinations, assessment) who may not be ready for the big world outside. For some, the halfway home becomes a permanent one, with only occasional outings.

Tiny-tabby Ursula has been with us more than six years and is just starting to accept that humans are not out to get her!”

Vancouver Coastal Health has reported that a number of people have been bitten by a rabid skunk in downtown Vancouver.

– Report Details –

SEEK TREATMENT
While Vancouver Coastal Health stated that the skunk was captured on Wednesday,
Oct. 21, anyone who had contact with a skunk between Sept. 22 and Oct. 17 is being asked to seek treatment.

LOCATION
The area covered by the advisory includes Stanley Park, the West End, and areas of downtown Vancouver bordered by Georgia and Burrard streets.

PET OWNERS
Any pet owner whose animal had direct contact with a skunk, in downtown Vancouver, during the four weeks identified by authorities should contact their vet immediately.

HUMAN EXPOSURE
Contact your GP or HealthLink BC
by calling 811 immediately.

REMINDER
This serves as a good reminder that if your dog or outdoor cat has not been vaccinated for Rabies within the last year, we encourage you to contact your vet to check whether their vaccine status is overdue or not.

Jim is everyone’s best boy! He came to the Sanctuary in the summer of 2019 with his bonded buddy Frank, both FIV cats from Alberta, both wary – but they soon settled in the Val Jones pen and became known as Frank’n’Jim. Sadly, we lost Frank within a couple of years, but Jim has so much love to give that he just continued to give out all the snuggles and purrs he’d shared with his buddy to all the other Val Jones cats. 💚🩵

He coaxed grumpy Magnus into snuggling with him under the heat lamp; he determinedly courted shy Minuet so that she gave up hiding and fully joined the colony; now he is often found sharing cuddles with bossy Captain Jack. In many ways, he would be the perfect cat to adopt out, but he has a chronic cold we need to monitor. And he is the social glue for this sweet group of cats – he loves his friends, and they greatly benefit from his perseverance and his love.

Kati’s volunteer foster maternity ward is HOPPING with babies! 💚💙

Mama Esme’s five kittens turn two weeks old on Saturday, while Mama Panther’s littles are already four weeks old. And in the sweetest twist, Esme has “adopted” one of Panther’s babies who was struggling. 🥹💚
