Yesterday was quite the rescue. I got a message in the morning about a bird making noise in a chimney. The house owner had been on vacation for some time, so we didn't know how long the bird had been down there.
We had no way of reaching the ird from where it was, so we investigated underneath the house in a crawl space. And there, rusted shut was a small hatch. The only viable way to get this bird out. The home owner insisted on being the one to crawl under. She was determined to rescue this bird. So under she went and I held a light for her and helped direct getting the hatch open.
With a two hammers a butterknife and brute force, the rusted hatch came loose and out came a tired, barely alive little flicker. He was cold and skinny. Hanging on by a thread. We cleaned him up so he could breath something other than soot, and I tucked him into my shirt to keep him warm.
I did everything I could to keep this little one alive, but he was to weak, and had been in there for to long. He passed away a few hours later.
But instead of dying alone, cold and in the dark, he was given the dignity of being warm, clean, safe and in the sunlight. And for this situation, that is a win. Sometimes providing a comfortable, dignified death is all we can do.
