Good morning everyone,

It’s going to be a scorcher today, with temperatures climbing into the 30s and sticking around for the next few days. With that kind of heat, we just wanted to send out a quick reminder to take care of yourselves and each other.

Alana, our Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, has shared a helpful flyer with the community and throughout our buildings. We thought it would be useful to send it directly to you as well — you’ll find it attached to this email. It includes tips on how to stay cool and how to recognize signs of heat-related illness.
Here are a few quick tips to help beat the heat:
• Stay hydrated – keep water nearby and drink often.
• Dress for the weather – light, breathable clothing is best.
• Take breaks – especially if you’re working outside or in warmer areas.
• Know the signs – dizziness, nausea, and fatigue can be signs of heat stress.
• Check in on others – especially those who might be more vulnerable.

Stay cool and take care!

🌡️ Extreme Heat Safety – Stay Safe and Cool! ☀️

With the hot weather here, it’s important we all take steps to stay safe. Heat can seriously affect your health — especially for Elders, young children, people with medical conditions, or those who live alone.

Here’s what to do during an Extreme Heat Emergency:

✅ Stay Cool
• Go to air-conditioned places like malls, libraries, or Rec Centres
• Take cool showers or soak your feet in cold water
• Wear a wet shirt or place a damp towel on your neck
• Wear light, loose clothing and a hat
• Avoid heavy activity during the hottest parts of the day

🚫 Don’t rely on fans alone – they don’t cool your body enough in extreme heat.

💧 Drink Water Often – even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.

🏠 Check your indoor temp – and check in on others! Especially Elders, pregnant people, and those with health conditions.

🩺 Know the Signs of Heat Illness

🚨 Call 911 if someone shows signs of heat stroke:
• Very high body temp
• Fainting or confusion
• Red, hot skin
• Trouble walking or talking

🆘 Cool them down fast with wet towels or a cool bath.

🟠 Watch for early symptoms like:
• Headache, dizziness, nausea
• Heavy sweating, muscle cramps
• Fast breathing or heartbeat
• Dark urine or not peeing much

👀 Neighbour Check-ins

Check on your neighbours, especially Elders or anyone living alone. A quick visit or call can make a big difference. Let’s look out for each other!

🌫️ Air Quality & Smoke

If the air is smoky, stay indoors if you can — but staying cool is more important than staying inside. Find a cool, safe space if your home gets too hot.

Stay safe, Katzie. Let’s take care of each other. ❤️
