Today is Mother’s Day.
There is a lot held in that word.

For some, it is a day of celebration. For others, it can bring up grief, distance, longing, or other complicated feelings.

At Taproot, we see the steady, everyday ways people show up for one another. Mothers, grandmothers, aunties, foster parents, kinship caregivers, and those who offer care, love, protection, patience, and support in ways that may not always be named.

Today, we recognize the relationships that help people feel safe, rooted, and cared for.

Happy Mother’s Day.

Today is Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people.

The red dress has become a powerful symbol of absence, remembrance and the lives that should still be here.

At Taproot, we pause to honour those who are missing and those whose lives have been taken, and to hold space for the families, survivors and communities who continue to carry this grief.

This is a day for remembrance, truth and continued responsibility.

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. This year’s theme, Honouring Asian Canadians: Stories that Built Canada, recognizes the histories, cultures and contributions of Asian Canadians across generations.

These stories are part of Canada’s story. They live in families, communities, workplaces, neighbourhoods, traditions, languages and everyday acts of care, leadership and belonging.

At Taproot, respect for all voices is one of our values. In our work, that means recognizing the histories and lived experiences people bring with them, and making room for people to be seen, heard and respected.

Thank you to , , and the Bloom team for the work behind this program, and to everyone who came by to help celebrate Bloom.

When Taproot’s leadership team came together in Vancouver for our annual meeting this month, the most important part was the stories.

That is part of good leadership, too. Staying close to the purpose of the work, and to each other, helps us return to our teams with more clarity, connection, and energy for what comes next.

Stories from across our organization that brought us back to the people we serve, the relationships at the heart of this work, and the kind of support that can change the course of someone’s day, or even their life.

There was space for big conversations, honest reflection, and some fun along the way. Impact stories grounded us in why this work matters, while time spent together outside the meeting room gave people a chance to connect in a different way.

That is part of good leadership too. Staying close to the purpose of the work, and to each other, helps us return to our teams with more clarity, connection, and energy for what comes next.

Today, we’re recognizing Administrative Professionals Day and the people across Taproot who help keep so much moving.

Administrative work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across the organization. Taproot administrative professionals keep things organized and support teams to help solve problems and create consistency in busy environments. This work makes a real difference every day.

To our administrative professionals across BC, Alberta and Ontario, thank you.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve shared stories from people who work at Taproot.

Different roles. Different paths. Different stages of life.
Some started in temporary roles and stayed.
Some stepped away to learn and grow, then chose to return.
Some have built long careers that continue to evolve.

There’s no single Taproot journey. What connects these stories is the space people have to grow, change direction, and stay connected to work that matters to them.

If you’re curious about what working at Taproot could look like for you, current opportunities are shared here: https://taproot.ca/come-work-with-us-taproot-community-support-services/

Ryan Martin is a Community Disability Worker in Acquired Brain Injury services in Edmonton. He is one of those people teams count on. A long-time frontline employee, Ryan knows the work from the ground up. Twice, he has stepped into a Team Leader role to provide maternity leave coverage, bringing stability and leadership when his team needed it.

That says a lot about how opportunity works at Taproot. It grows out of real experience, trust, and the willingness to step up. Ryan’s story is a strong example of how people build their path here by doing the work well and being someone others can rely on.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and April is Autism Acceptance Month. It is a chance to speak to the importance of support that is respectful, personalized, and shaped around the person.

At Taproot, we support children, youth, and adults with autism across our services. That support starts with understanding strengths, needs, and goals, and creating space for people to be included and supported in ways that work for them.

Autism is not always visible. That is why respect, patience, and understanding matter. Meaningful support starts with listening, not assuming, and responding to each person in ways that reflect who they are.
