Content Warning: Su***de among Indigenous communities.
During National Indigenous History Month, we honour the histories, cultures, strength, resilience, and knowledge that First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities continue to carry and protect.
We also acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization, residential schools, intergenerational trauma, and systemic inequities. These impacts continue to affect mental health and access to care. In 2024, 47% of First Nations people living off reserve, 43% of Métis, and 35% of Inuit reported needing mental health care in the previous year. Su***de rates among Indigenous people have also been reported as three times higher than among non-Indigenous people.
These statistics are not just numbers. They reflect real people, families, communities, and the urgent need for culturally safe, accessible, and community led supports.
Learning, reflection, and truth-telling are part of our shared responsibility toward reconciliation. We commit to listening, respecting Indigenous voices, and supporting meaningful change.🧡
