⚓ Join Us for an Exciting New Training Year at Parksville Sea Cadets! ⚓

Summer may be coming to an end, but a new Sea Cadet year is about to begin!

On Wednesday, September 9, we invite current cadets, families, supporters, and prospective cadets to our Open House and Registration Night. Meet our cadets and staff, learn about the opportunities available through the Sea Cadet program, and see firsthand what our corps does throughout the year as our senior cadets showcase training, activities, leadership opportunities, and more.

From seamanship and drill to leadership development, community service, sailing, ceremonial events, teamwork, and adventure training, Sea Cadets offers youth opportunities to learn new skills, build confidence, and create lasting friendships.

⚓️ An Unexpected Learning Opportunity at Sea ⚓️

While returning home from summer training at Vernon CTC, Sgt D. Houser, FCpl R. Abbott, FCpl A. Korchinski, and CPO2 J. Watson were given a unique opportunity that turned an ordinary trip home into an unforgettable experience.

After completing their summer courses, the cadets travelled by charter bus from Vernon CTC to Horseshoe Bay Terminal. Once aboard BC Ferries' Queen of Oak Bay for the crossing from Departure Bay, CPO2 Watson approached the vessel's Chief Steward to inquire about the possibility of a behind-the-scenes tour for the cadets.

Recognizing both the cadets' curiosity and the value of the Cadet Program, the Chief Steward was happy to accommodate the request.

The cadets were treated to an extensive tour of the ship, including exclusive access to both the bridge and the engine room. During the tour, they learned about the operation of the vessel's engines, the responsibilities involved in navigating and operating the ferry, and the many roles required to keep the ship running safely and efficiently.

They also had the opportunity to meet several members of the ship's crew, including Chiefs, Mates, and the Captain.

This unexpected experience provided a fantastic hands-on learning opportunity that goes well beyond what cadets would typically encounter during their regular training program. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the crew of the Queen of Oak Bay for their generosity, hospitality, and willingness to share their knowledge with our cadets.

Well done to these cadets for demonstrating initiative, professionalism, and curiosity throughout their journey home.

💪 Cadet Spotlight | CTC Vernon 💪

This summer, CPO2 Watson represented 296 RCSCC at CTC Vernon as a participant in the Fitness and Sports Instructor (FSI) Course, successfully earning their qualification.

The FSI course provides cadets with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to lead fitness sessions, instruct sports activities, and promote healthy, active lifestyles within the Cadet Program. Through hands-on training and practical leadership experiences, cadets build confidence in teaching, motivating others, and creating engaging fitness environments.

Reflecting on the experience, Watson shared that it was a lot of fun learning how to teach fitness and sports while watching fellow cadets develop the same skills. One of the highlights of the course was the friendships formed along the way, with cadets from across the country quickly becoming a close-knit team.

We are proud of CPO2 Watson for taking on this rewarding course and representing 296 with professionalism and enthusiasm. Congratulations on this achievement, and we look forward to seeing these new skills put into action at the corps!

⚓ Cadet Spotlight | HMCS Quadra ⚓

This summer, PO1 Kane and PO2 Hager are representing 296 RCSCC at HMCS Quadra as participants in the Ships Boat Operator (SBO) Course.

The SBO course provides cadets with practical experience in operating and handling small vessels, focusing on skills such as boat safety, navigation, seamanship, communications, emergency procedures, and crew leadership. Through both classroom instruction and extensive on-water training, cadets develop the knowledge and confidence required to safely operate and lead a crew in a variety of boating situations.

We are proud of Kane and Hager for taking on this challenging course and expanding their maritime skills while representing our corps. We wish them continued success as they advance their training and leadership abilities.

⛵ BC Summer Games Provincial Regatta ⛵
A big congratulations to CPO2 Kamel, who took a short break from CTC Quadra to compete at the BC Summer Games Provincial Regatta hosted by the Central Okanagan Sailing Association!
Battling conditions that ranged from 0 knots to absolutely honking winds, along with lightning, rain, and smoke, Kamel and their partner demonstrated skill, resilience, and determination throughout the event. Together, they earned an impressive 9th place overall.
Even more exciting, cadet sailors had an outstanding showing, with three boats earning podium finishes across different divisions. We're proud of all the cadets who represented their teams and communities so well!

Professional & Proud ⚓️ Wondering what our Adult Staff are up to this summer? ☀️
This summer, members of our corps are taking on new opportunities and gaining valuable experience at Cadet Training Centres across Canada.

We're shining the spotlight on CI Rounding, who is spending the summer at HMCS Ontario CTC as a Sail 2 Divisional Officer for Shearwater Division. Excited to experience CTC in a new location, he is looking forward to seeing a different side of the Cadet Program while supporting cadets through their summer training journey. Through leadership, mentorship, and hands-on instruction, he will be helping develop the next generation of sailors while gaining new perspectives and experiences of his own.

We're proud to see our staff representing 296 RCSCC ESQUIMALT and can't wait to hear about their summer adventures! ⚓

This summer, our Parksville Sea Cadets are taking on new challenges and building valuable leadership skills at Cadet Training Centres across Canada.
We’re kicking things off with our Chief, CPO2 Kamel, who is spending the summer at HMCS Quadra in Comox, BC as a PO1 staffing the Sail 1 course. Through leadership, mentorship, and hands-on training, they are helping shape the next generation of sailors while continuing to grow as a cadet leader.
