You have likely heard that teachers and their employer are at an impasse in negotiations—here’s why that matters to all of us:

Teachers across British Columbia are being asked to do more with less. Classrooms are under-resourced, and the is not stepping up to improve conditions in our public schools.

For more than eight years, our provincial government—one that claims to support labour—has been in power, yet public education has seen little progress. Promises of new supports and resources have been ignored, leaving teachers overwhelmed and students underserved.

Despite campaign commitments to add more educational assistants and school counsellors, the BC NDP has failed to deliver. The result?

New teachers are leaving the profession, seasoned educators are retiring early, and a teacher shortage is spreading across the province (yes, even here).

There is hope. The BC government has the power to fix this. The BCTF is simply asking for the same financial considerations given to other provincial unions. If you believe it’s time for the BC NDP to invest in public education, make your voice heard—send Premier Eby a letter today:

Did you know there is no longer any textbooks in our elementary schools? Teachers, especially newer ones, struggle to find appropriate resources to use and end up buying their own.

Tell the BC government to deliver better classroom conditions!
Now is the time to tell the BC government to deliver on more time, more supports, and more resources to address classroom complexity.

Use this online template to write to the Premier and Finance Minister. After eight years of promises, it’s time for the BC government to invest in public education. Share the campaign . Kids deserve the chance to thrive, but right now, funding isn’t keeping pace. The BC government needs to do more for public education.

A good article today in the Globe and Mail on violence on Canadian schools. This is something all teachers, students, and parents should be aware of.

The article also does a great job of linking the violence in schools to the slashing of support staff, class composition and size cap removal, and infrastructure degradation.

Unfortunately, the article cannot be shared on Facebook, but it is the #1 trending article on the G&M site, so it should be easy to find.

At our Representative Assembly today, the BCTF voted to support The Alberta Teachers' Association with a donation of up to $1 million in financial and legal assistance to help them in their fight against the Alberta government's unjust attack on their Charter rights.

On October 27, Premier Danielle Smith invoked the notwithstanding clause and legislated teachers back to work after three weeks on the picket line. This was an aggressive act, and though BCTF members are not unfamiliar with governments whose priorities do not include public education, this attack is a unique and severe infringement on the rights protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Canadians must take a stand against this kind of government overreach and infringement on our rights. The BCTF is proud to contribute to that fight with solidarity and significant resources.

Alberta Teachers, we are with you!

Teachers across Canada understand the vital importance of fair negotiations in securing the conditions necessary to provide high-quality public education. Resorting to the notwithstanding clause to override those rights undermines both the integrity of the bargaining process and the public’s trust in government accountability. It sends a troubling message that constitutionally protected rights can be set aside for expedience rather than addressed through good-faith dialogue.

We urge the Alberta government to reconsider this approach and to re-engage with the Alberta Teachers’ Association in a manner that honours educators’ rights, values their professional voice, and prioritizes the best interests of students and communities.
