Today, Bill C-9 passed through the Senate with one amendment related to adding the symbol of the noose to the list of prohibited hate symbols.
Unfortunately, the amendment to restore protection for sincerely held faith beliefs was not supported despite the massive outcry from Canadians.
The final Senate vote was 45 in favour, 13 opposed, with 2 abstentions. Thirty-five senators were absent.
The bill will now return to the House of Commons for debate regarding the Senate amendment.
I want to personally thank everyone of you who worked so hard over the last six months. Whether you made phone calls, invested your own finances to send postcards, sent emails, signed petitions, supported our team on the front lines, or faithfully prayed, your efforts mattered.
It is never a loss to stand for what is right.
And there is a silver lining in all of this: what does not work for our deliverance can still produce awakening if we allow it.
Through this journey, a tangible movement has emerged across our nationโpeople who are authentically engaged in the democratic process and committed to making a difference.
That is a significant victory -- an authentic and valuable gain.
Many of you became involved for the very first time, and I want to encourage you to stay connected. There will be future opportunities to stand for truth, freedom, and the values we cherish. Our commitment is to continue serving and equipping Canadians who want to make a positive impact.
Together, we are stronger. And we have not come this far only to come this far.
Let us never forget: the nation goes to those who show up.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Senator Yonah Martin and Senator Denise Batters for courageously championing the concerns of the many thousands of Canadians who spoke up on this issue. Your leadership and conviction did not go unnoticed.
We will post the voting record, including senators who were absent, as soon as it becomes available. When we do, we encourage you to take a moment to send kind and respectful messages of appreciation to those who took a stand.
Thank you again for your prayers, your courage, and your commitment to Canada.
