BEING Studio

BEING Studio BEING is about truly valuing the work —
by valuing the artist who created it. More than 60 artists participate on a regular basis.

BEING Studio (formerly H’Art of Ottawa) is a non-profit visual arts studio and creative writing program for adults with a development disability. BEING opened its doors in 2002 in response to the need for meaningful programs for these members of our community. BEING Studio is also inspired by a strong belief that people with a developmental and intellectual disability can be productive members of

our society. Each artist at the studio participates in group discussions, as well as self-focused activities such as journaling, drawing and painting. The artists learn to transform their ideas and emotions into written words and art. At BEING Studio we believe that through this process of visual learning, the artists develop skills that can be used to help each one fulfill their full potential and improve their quality of life. The program follows an innovative approach that allows staff and volunteers to work with the artists to develop self-expression, independence and entrepreneurial skills. The art is exhibited in various community venues and galleries throughout the year in the Ottawa area. Following a revenue-sharing approach, the artists work together to present and sell their work. BEING fosters a sense of belonging and participation in the community: each artist knows they are making a unique contribution to the cultural life of Ottawa. With each art show, the studio and its artists reach out to connect, and Ottawa and the surrounding community has opened its arms wide to embrace the colour, the enthusiasm and the spirit of BEING’s talented artists. Thank you for your continued interest and support in the BEING Studio program and artists.

Are you a cat lover? If so, you’ll love Hector the Rainbow Cat, a multimedia felted sculpture created by Frances Laube.

The piece was inspired by BEING Studio facilitator Aaron Daniel Casey’s sculptural figures, combined with Frances’ own love of needle-felting. Frances describes the work as “a magic cat.”

Be sure to check it out and place a bid if you’d like to make Hector your own, starting May 31st, 2026: https://www.32auctions.com/organizations/114944/auctions/201293/auction_items/7005682

Meet May’s Artist Spotlight: Monique Choquette!

Monique is a new artist who joined the studio this year, who creates one-of-a-kind art combining pencil crayons and acrylic markers into beautiful pieces. “I grew up in Chicoutimi, Quebec. I have French, Metis, and English roots. I started doing my art in elementary school after I began drawing on my mother’s wall, and it became a frequent part of my life after that. To me, being an artist encompasses life. It means the ability to share a piece of me with the world.”

Visit the Spring-a-ling Shop and see Monique’s artworks in-person on May 31st, Bronson Centre.

It’s a pleasure to introduce April’s artist of the month: Pat Collins!

Pat is joined our community over the last year, who loves working with watercolor and markers. Her work is inspired by pictures of animals, buildings, landscapes and art museums. Pat shares this about her work; "I want people to feel nice, good feelings when they look at my artwork. Being a good artist means being a good drawer, a good painter and inspiring other people to make art. I love making artwork."
