In August, the students in our DragonFly Moving Minds programme participated in our Leadership week! We engaged in discussions about what makes a good leader as well as a good participant. Students practiced these skills as they paired up to lead the group through a different sport everyday. Together we learned how to plan for the weather, gather and care for supplies, and navigate the streets safely. Students had the opportunity to practice navigating the city bus, thanks to OC Transpo, and on Friday we learned about Canada’s federal government as we toured Parliament and met with our MP, the Honourable Mona Fortier.

Les élèves du programme DragonFly Moving Minds ont vécu notre Semaine du leadership en août ! Nous avons discuté de ce qui fait un bon leader et un bon participant. Les élèves ont mis ces compétences en pratique en se mettant en duo pour guider le groupe à travers un sport différent chaque jour. Nous avons appris à nous préparer selon la météo, à gérer le matériel et à nous déplacer en ville de façon sécuritaire. Grâce à OC Transpo, les élèves ont pu s’exercer à prendre l’autobus, et vendredi, nous avons visité le Parlement du Canada et rencontré notre députée, l’honorable Mona Fortier, pour en apprendre davantage sur le gouvernement fédéral.

Our intern Emily joined MP Mona Fortier onstage to thank the Government of Canada for a wonderful summer of opportunities.

Emily said, "Hello everyone, my name is Emily and I’m a Canada Summer Jobs Intern at The School of Dance. We've been super busy working with 245 youth. We’ve been travelling to sites all over the City of Ottawa, with very big thanks to OC Transpo for helping us to teach our DragonFly learners with Down syndrome how to become confident travelers on the trains and buses. Our highlight visits include Fire Station 57, where the firefighters showed us how they slid down the poles, let us climb into the fire engines, and hold the fire hoses. We loved meeting the RCMP horses. Tomorrow, a group of us will be visiting Parliament – thank you in advance to our MP Mona Fortier. We’ve been outside playing sports, cooling off
in the water park close to The School, and DANCING everyday. We brought a photo essay with us to show you more about what we’ve been doing. Thank you Canada Summer Jobs – we Interns are having a wonderful time learning from the artists of The School of Dance.”

Welcome back to Joanna Adair who is completing her Community Leadership Experience (CLE) with us this summer in our DragonFly® Programme for learners with Down syndrome. Last week, our DragonFly Moving Minds programme explored the City of Ottawa, travelling by OC Transpo. We visited Fire Station 57, where we had a tour and the opportunity to sit in the fire truck! We danced to live music from the band Empanadas Ilegales at the National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts, took a trip to Starbucks for a refreshing drink, and finished off by exploring Buskerfest where we enjoyed a stunning performance by Pancho Libre! Students practiced bus etiquette and engaged in an important conversation about money. Our bus experience was very positive, and we look forward to continuing this summer tradition! Thank you to OC Transpo for making our bus week not only fun, but also educational!

La semaine dernière, notre programme DragonFly Moving Minds a exploré la ville d'Ottawa en se déplaçant avec OC Transpo. Nous sommes allés à la caserne de pompiers 57, où nous avons fait une visite guidée et même pris place dans le camion de pompiers! Nous avons dansé sur la musique du groupe Empanadas Ilegales au Centre national des Arts, fait un arrêt chez Starbucks pour des boissons rafraîchissantes, puis avons terminé notre semaine en explorant le festival Buskerfest ou nous avons pu apprécié une performance incroyable de Pancho Libre. Les élèves ont mis en pratique les bonnes manières qui sont de mise en autobus et ont discuté de notions essentielles liées à l'argent. Notre expérience en autobus a été très positive et nous avons hâte de poursuivre cette tradition estivale. Un grand merci à OC Transpo d'avoir rendu notre semaine non seulement amusante, mais aussi éducative.
