For countless families throughout the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe, the blessings we celebrate this weekend can feel painfully distant. For a mother displaced by conflict, a father struggling to feed his children, or a religious sister serving communities devastated by war, hope often comes from knowing they have not been forgotten.

As CNEWA celebrates 100 years of mission and service this year, we are especially moved by the extraordinary legacy of compassion you help carry forward. Your generosity is faith made visible through love, restoring dignity, strengthening communities, and reminding those who suffer that they are valued and have purpose.

The Mass for Peace, organized by the Middle East Council of Churches, CNEWA Canada and the Fondation Bisonnette pour la Terre Sainte, took place at Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa this past weekend.

Archbishop Marcel Damphousse of Ottawa-Cornwall presided over the Liturgy.

Christian leaders from several Eastern Churches joined the Apostolic Nuncio to Canada, Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič, in a visible expression of solidarity with communities affected by conflict and displacement.

For CNEWA Canada, the gathering was a reminder of the people behind each appeal for help. The prayers offered in Ottawa were joined to that continuing commitment to stand with those seeking safety, dignity and hope.

As CNEWA marks its 100th Anniversary year, we remain honoured to walk alongside migrants and refugees around the world, especially throughout the regions where we serve: caring for those in need, supporting local Eastern Catholic Churches and bringing greater awareness to the realities faced by displaced families and communities.

For a century, this mission of compassion and solidarity has remained at the heart of our call to serve.

When parents are preparing to enroll students at St. Sophia Catholic Lyceum in Lviv, Ukraine, the first question they ask is: What does your bomb shelter look like? ⚠️

The Rev. Taras Mysiakovskyy, school director, shows them the shelter, explaining that the walls are thick because the monastery where the school is located was built early in the 17th century ⛪️

Church-run programs in are hoping to soften the impact of more than four years of war on children. Some programs include developmental activities and art-therapy techniques to help children work through their emotions and reduce aggression.

Through the Ukrainian Catholic Church and partners supported by CNEWA, vulnerable families, displaced people, children and people with disabilities continue to find shelter, care and dignity when they need it most.

On this anniversary, we honour Ukraine’s resilience and remain united in prayer and solidarity with all those working toward a future of freedom and peace.

At the invitation of Bishop Paul-Marwan Tabet, Eparch of the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of Montreal, Dr. Adriana Bara had the privilege of participating in a Divine Liturgy, that celebrated the Assumption of the Mother of God at Notre-Dame-du-Liban Church in Laval.

Dr. Bara’s participation also provided an important opportunity to raise awareness of CNEWA and our work in Lebanon. As conflicts continue to affect families and communities throughout the region, CNEWA remains committed to accompanying those who are most vulnerable and helping as many people as possible.
