Happy Ocean Week! 🐠🌊The ocean is at the heart of life on Earth. It supports incredible biodiversity, helps regulate our climate, and provides for communities and livelihoods across the country. That’s why we are continually in awe of the dedication and hard work our chapters put into protecting these vital waters:
• CPAWS Manitoba is calling for the protection of Western Hudson Bay, a vital inland sea home to polar bears, beluga whales, and rich bird habitat. A proposed National Marine Conservation Area could help safeguard this ecosystem while supporting local communities and economies. Add your voice in support: hbnmca.info
CPAWS-BC is celebrating the establishment of Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon, the “Realm of the Salmon, Home of the Salmon,” a major milestone for protecting critical salmon habitat and supporting healthy coastal ecosystems and communities. They also continue to support the Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area Network, a long-term initiative to safeguard one of the most biodiverse marine regions on the coast while strengthening Indigenous-led stewardship and sustainable coastal livelihoods. CPAWS-NL CPAWS-NL is advocating for the protection of the South Coast, a breathtaking region of deep fjords, abundant marine life, and culturally important coastal waters. Following the Province's decision to halt the feasibility assessment for a proposed National Marine Conservation Area, you can support the continuation of this community-driven process by sending a letter: https://action.cpaws.org/page/186023/action/1. You can also explore their Special Marine Areas Data Hub, an interactive tool showcasing Newfoundland and Labrador’s unique marine species, habitats, migratory routes, and conservation opportunities through maps and open-access data: https://datahub.cpawsnl.org/
