Happy Ocean Week! 🐠🌊The ocean is at the heart of life on Earth. It supports incredible biodiversity, helps regulate our climate, and provides for communities and livelihoods across the country. That’s why we are continually in awe of the dedication and hard work our chapters put into protecting these vital waters:

• CPAWS Manitoba is calling for the protection of Western Hudson Bay, a vital inland sea home to polar bears, beluga whales, and rich bird habitat. CPAWS-BC is celebrating the establishment of Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon, the “Realm of the Salmon, Home of the Salmon,” a major milestone for protecting critical salmon habitat and supporting healthy coastal ecosystems and communities. They also continue to support the Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area Network, a long-term initiative to safeguard one of the most biodiverse marine regions on the coast while strengthening Indigenous-led stewardship and sustainable coastal livelihoods. Trading-off the habitats of at-risk species, like caribou and Pacific orcas, in order to build faster, is not nation-building. It’s nation-breaking.

Now is the time to think carefully and wisely about Canada’s next steps. Balancing responsible development with environmental sustainability is possible, but not if we rush decisions without seriously contemplating the impacts.

The federal government has proposed changes to fast-track major projects by weakening environmental safeguards, shortening impact assessments, and limiting oversight.
That means species at risk, critical habitats, clean water, and community wellbeing could all be pushed aside in the name of “building faster.”

We can’t make Canada strong if we build on a foundation we’ve already broken. Nature protection is nation-building infrastructure.

Les Canadiens ont jusqu'au 7 JUIN pour défendre la nature. ⏳

Le gouvernement fédéral a proposé des modifications visant à accélérer la mise en œuvre de grands projets en affaiblissant les mesures de protection de l'environnement, en raccourcissant les évaluations d'impact et en limitant la surveillance.

Cela signifie que les espèces en péril, les habitats essentiels, la qualité de l’eau et le bien-être des communautés pourraient tous être mis de côté au nom d’une « construction plus rapide ».

Nous ne pouvons pas rendre le Canada plus fort si nous construisons sur des fondations que nous avons déjà détruites. La protection de la nature est une infrastructure fondamentale pour la construction de la nation.

New Brunswick’s peatlands and wetlands are powerful natural allies in the fight against climate change. These ecosystems store massive amounts of carbon, help protect water supplies, reduce wildfire risks, and support biodiversity that communities rely on every day. 🌿💧

That’s why Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society New Brunswick - CPAWS NB is calling for stronger protections for peatlands as part of the province’s ongoing review of clean water laws. While most wetlands require permits for commercial development, peatlands are currently excluded—leaving some of these vital ecosystems without the same level of oversight and protection.

This conversation is about ensuring New Brunswick’s laws reflect the importance of wetlands and the role they play in a healthy, climate-resilient future. Protecting peatlands means protecting our climate, our water, and the natural spaces that make this province unique.
