Thank you to our Accredited Member, Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, for continuing to advocate for stronger protections for our companions. 🐾

This is a huge step forward, but also an important reminder that the work to end cosmetic tail docking is not over.

Don't forget to sign their petition to make sure puppies receive the same protections from unnecessary cosmetic procedures.

Big news for animals in Ontario - and it's thanks to advocates like you! 🐾

The province just passed a regulation banning ear cropping, declawing, and devocalization, effective January 1, 2027. This is a landmark moment for animal welfare, and proof that when people speak up, governments listen.

But puppies are still waiting for the same protection. Tail docking - removing a puppy's tail for appearance alone - was quietly left out of the ban with no explanation. Ontario remains the only province in Canada with no restrictions on this painful and unnecessary procedure.

Cats finally have the protection they deserve. Now let's make sure dogs do too. Sign our petition and help us finish the job. 🐶

Early care matters: what calves experience shapes their lifelong welfare.

Scientific evidence shows that weaning is one of the most stressful events in any animal’s life. Low-stress alternatives like two-step weaning (using nose paddles or fence-line separation) allow the mother and calf to remain in sight and sound of each other while transitioning. Research has shown that these gradual methods foster a healthier immune system and better weight gain. Furthermore, preconditioning calves on their home farm prior to transport significantly reduces the need for routine antibiotic use.

The draft Beef Code recognizes these benefits but keeps them as mere recommendations. During the public comment period, you can request stronger, enforceable standards to protect young calves during this critical transition.

This public comment period is your chance to ask for:

✔️Mandatory two-step weaning (fence-line or nose paddles), to reduce stress and disease.
✔️Required preconditioning on the ranch of origin prior to transport to an auction or feedlot.
✔️A shift away from prophylactic antibiotic use by prioritizing these proven management practices that support natural immunity.

You have until June 12th to submit your comments. Clear, respectful public input can turn vague guidelines into real, enforceable protection for cattle used for meat production.

Remember: Original comments, written in your own words, are most effective.

Submit your comments to NFACC: https://www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/beef-cattle
