For the first time in more than 60 years, no whales or dolphins are known to remain in captivity in Canada.

This is a milestone decades in the making.

In 2019, Canada passed the Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act, helping ensure there would be no future generation of whales and dolphins kept in captivity in this country. Thank you to the federal government and all those who helped make this landmark legislation a reality.

We also recognize the animal welfare organizations and advocates who worked together for decades to bring an end to cetacean captivity in Canada. And every person who signed a petition, joined a protest, wrote a letter, donated or raised their voice for these animals. This moment belongs to all of you.

We are also grateful to the animal care staff who stayed with the animals at Marineland and continued caring for them through an incredibly uncertain time.

The outcome for the remaining whales is not the one we would have chosen. Moving them to other facilities in human care was not a perfect solution, but with no operational whale sanctuary available to receive them, it was the only viable path out of Marineland.

Today, we can recognize just how far Canada has come.

🐾 Matawa Animal Wellness Services: MAWS works to improve access to veterinary care and dog management across ᒪᑕᐧᐊ Matawa First Nations.
🐾 Precious Paws Rescue: This volunteer-run Ontario rescue provides foster-based care and veterinary support to dogs in need while helping them find loving homes.

We are heartbroken to learn that Peekachu, a 23-year-old beluga recently transferred from Marineland to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, has died. 💔

Peekachu was captured from the wild in Russia in 2004 and spent more than two decades in captivity. In the days leading up to her passing, her bloodwork indicated she was dehydrated. A necropsy has since been conducted, with further testing underway to better understand what led to her death. We hope these findings will be made public so there can be greater transparency around what happened.

Peekachu's death adds another heartbreaking chapter to what these animals have already endured.

With no operational whale sanctuary available to receive them, there was no other immediate way to remove the belugas from Marineland. However, it was never the future Humane Canada envisioned when advocating to end the captivity of whales and dolphins.

Wild animals do not belong in captivity. Peekachu’s death is a painful reminder of the lasting consequences of confining animals whose complex needs cannot be fully met in these environments, and why animals already in captivity need legally required contingency and end-of-life planning.

Our thoughts are with Peekachu and all those who cared for her.
