NEXT THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15TH - Don't miss a night out of music and fun with October Host Band FOUR ON THE FLOOR!

🕰️ Entertainment starts at 7:30 with an opening set played by the host band– then, at 8:15, we turn the mic over to you!

Our incredible host band lineup features Anita Tong (vocals), Gerald Leahy (piano), Bonnie Robinson (upright bass), and Chris Thompson (drums)!

🏷️ Cover is $5 for Friends of JazzWorks and $10 for General Admission (become a friend at the door or at https://www.jazzworkscanada.com/become-a-friend.html !)

🎸 For guitarists, an amp will be available. 🎛️ For bassists, an upright bass & amp will be available. 🥁 For drummers, a drum kit will be available. 🎹 For pianists, a miked acoustic upright will be available. 🎤 For vocalists, a mic will be available, or feel free to bring your own!

Après 31 ans de Jam Sessions à succès à Ottawa, JazzWorks Canada propose désormais ses Jam Sessions mensuelles à Montréal ! Joignez-vous à nous le troisième jeudi de chaque mois à la Brasserie Beaubien pour le groupe hôte éblouissant, sélectionné par Adrian Vedady, directeur musical du Camp de Jazz de JazzWorks. Suite à la performance du groupe hôte, on passe le microphone à vous ! Cet événement est un incontournable pour tous ceux qui veulent s'engager dans la scène de jazz montréalaise. Des amateurs et musiciens aspirants aux professionnels, cette Jam Session a tout !

After a successful 31-year run in Ottawa, JazzWorks Canada has expanded its monthly JazzWorks Jams to Montreal! Join us on the third Thursday of every month at Brasserie Beaubien for a phenomenal host band at 7:30, selected by Adrian Vedady, the Musical Director for JazzWorks annual Jazz Camp. Following the host set, we open the floor for you to jam! This event is a must for anyone wanting to engage in the local jazz scene in Montreal. From amateur and aspiring musicians to professionals, this jam has it all!

DON’T MISS THE FIRST VOM OF THE SEASON! 🎙️🎶 Mike Manny returns to mentor another Vocal Open Mic tomorrow, Sunday October 4th at 10,000 Hours Piano Rehearsal Studio from 2-4PM!

Manny is an alum of undergraduate music studies at Humber College and graduate studies at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York City. After studying in New York, Mike returned to Toronto where he freelanced throughout Southern Ontario in various jazz settings and local Salsa bands. Working at the Toronto Faculty of Music, he was the conductor and music arranger of the Toronto All-Star Big Band for 10 years. After starting his military career in the Artillery Reserves, Mike transferred to the Regular Force as a full-time musician in Ottawa. As a musician in the Canadian Armed Forces, he has travelled the world performing music. Manny’s insightful and encouraging mentorship is widely appreciated by JazzWorks’ VOM participants. Join us next Sunday at 10,000 Hours for the RETURN of Vocal Open Mics, hosted by Mike Manny! Arrive promptly with lead sheets to secure your spot, spaces are limited!

ON MIKE MANNY:
A first-generation Canadian of Caribbean/West Indian descent, Mike Manny was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He began his musical journey at age four with the Humber College – Music Education for Children Program and continued his training at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, Humber College, and the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Mike’s early passion for working with vocalists led him to develop skills as an accompanist and musical director. During high school and post-secondary education, he gained experience in musical theatre, jazz ensembles, and community theatre productions, eventually honing his expertise in straight-ahead swing and hard-bop while remaining versatile across various music genres.

After studying in New York, Mike returned to Toronto, freelancing throughout southern Ontario in jazz and Salsa settings while serving as arranger and conductor for the Toronto All-Star Big Band (TABB). During his decade with TABB, he showcased music from the big band swing era and worked extensively with solo vocalists and vocal groups. Mike later transitioned into a military career, traveling the world as a musician with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Now based in Ottawa, and no longer with the music trade, Mike works in Information Management at National Defence Headquarters while continuing his freelance music career. With Toronto-based musicians, he co-leads the jazz group, THERMO, which released its debut album, Birdlike, in 2022, with a follow-up planned for 2025.

An avid night-rated pilot, Mike volunteers with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, mentoring youth in drill/dress/deportment/leadership, and aviation, through their Power Familiarization Program where he takes cadets flying in order to encourage an interest in aviation, and hopefully inspire them to pursue their own careers in aviation.
