Warning: an overload of cuteness incoming! Last week, our recLINK program brought a little pony magic to adults and seniors in one of our communities! Thank you to Ottawa Community Foundation for their generous funding and support, and to Hoofbeats and Heartbeats Equine, Aging in Place and Ottawa Community Housing - OCH for collaborating with us to make this possible. There's something incredibly special about spending time with animals, and these visits create meaningful moments of connection that help reduce isolation one hug at a time!

Today is World Mental Health Day, so let’s take a moment to remember that taking care of our mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness. Let’s keep showing up for ourselves and each other, because we all deserve to feel seen, supported and empowered to thrive.

A great day on the course, with a great group of supporters, can become something much bigger. Our 13th Annual Charity Golf Tournament brought together an incredible community of golfers, sponsors, volunteers and partners in support of Ottawa Community Housing - OCH communities.

Together, we raised more than $154,000. But what matters most is what that generosity makes possible: free programs that help children and youth get active and explore their interests, help young people prepare for their futures, help adults build skills and pursue employment, and bring people together through recreation and community connection.

A huge thank you to everyone for investing in this work and helping turn a day on the golf course into opportunities that extend far beyond it.

On October 7, we teamed up with MASC and artist Claudia Salguero Community Engaged Artist & Muralist / Digital Artist to bring a Mandala Drawing Pop-In to an Ottawa Community Housing - OCH community. It was a joy to see residents come together for a relaxing, meditative evening of art.

Part of our recLINK program, this event is a reminder that recreation matters at every age. For adults, accessible opportunities to be creative and spend time together can help reduce loneliness and isolation while strengthening community. And, of course, art has a wonderful way of bringing joy to everyone!

We’re proud to make creative and recreational experiences accessible to people living in OCH communities, and we can’t wait for the next one! Thank you to MASC, Claudia, Confederation Court Community House and OCH for helping make this evening possible.

A few more moments from last Saturday’s Soccer Fest! There was so much energy and joy on display. An atmosphere like this is one of the greatest joys of youth-focused programming!

Soccer Fest is one of the highlights of our recLINK calendar, bringing together children and youth from across Ottawa Community Housing - OCH communities to enjoy an afternoon of soccer (and pizza!). From soccer and swimming to camps, arts and other recreational activities, recLINK helps make recreation more accessible to children and youth living in OCH communities.

A big thank you again to Blair Court, Banff, Confederation Court and Debra Dynes Community Houses, and Atlético Ottawa and Ottawa Internationals Soccer Club for making it such a great day.

On October 3, we hosted our annual Soccer Fest, bringing together children and youth from Blair Court, Banff, Confederation Court and Debra Dynes Community Houses for an afternoon of teamwork and soccer! Canada’s historic World Cup run showed us what can happen when young players get the support and opportunity to dream big. Our annual Soccer Fest ensures that more children and youth growing up in Ottawa Community Housing - OCH communities get the chance to play and fall in love with the beautiful game.

Today is National Seniors Day, and we’re celebrating the elders who help make our communities stronger through their stories, wisdom, knowledge and care. We’re committed to supporting seniors and creating more opportunities for them to connect and participate in their communities.

Today is a day to remember, listen and learn. We honour residential school Survivors, their kin and communities, and recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that calls on all of us to keep learning and taking meaningful action.

On September 25, seniors in one of our communities came together for a Dreamcatcher workshop, generously sponsored by Ottawa Community Housing - OCH's Anti-Racism BIPOC Employee Resource Group (ERG). This workshop was organized by Bougie Birch, and provided residents and staff with an opportunity to connect through creativity and reflect on Indigenous histories, cultures and traditions as we approach National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Dreamcatchers originated in Anishinaabe culture as the “spider web charm” and have been widely shared beyond their original cultural context. Dreamcatchers have deep cultural significance and are traditionally associated with protection and filtering out bad dreams. Through the workshop, we had an opportunity to create, learn and reflect on the significance of dreamcatchers and Canada’s Indigenous traditions.

As we move forward, may we carry the spirit of reflection and community with us, and may everyone have only good dreams ahead.

On September 24, children and youth in an Ottawa Community Housing - OCH community came together for a special Paint Night as part of recLINK’s Pop-in & Play program. It was heartwarming to see kids getting lost in the fun of creating. We may have also discovered a few talented young artists along the way!

A big thank you to An Nguyen - Artist for leading such a fun and creative session. Through recLINK, we’re committed to making art and recreation more accessible to children and youth in Ottawa Community Housing - OCH communities, giving them more chances to play, create, discover new interests and simply enjoy being kids.
