Why Volunteering Matters in Recovery
The men in the program recently came together to work on a landscaping project in the backyard. While it may have looked like a simple yard improvement project, it was actually an opportunity to practice many of the skills that support long-term recovery. Volunteering creates opportunities to develop and strengthen the principles that are essential in recovery: showing up, being dependable, communicating effectively, helping others, and taking pride in positive accomplishments.
The landscaping project required teamwork, communication, planning, problem-solving, and cooperation. Each person played an important role in moving the project forward, demonstrating what can be accomplished when people work together toward a common goal. Projects like this also help build confidence and accountability.
As the backyard continues to transform, the men are able to see the direct results of their hard work, commitment, and dedication. The transformation of the backyard reflects more than just an improved outdoor space, it reflects the personal growth, connection, and recovery taking place every day within our program.
