It is with heavy hearts that we at CNFA bid farewell to our friend and Kenyan nursing colleague, Sarah Abuyeka. Sarah's passing was unexpected and has deeply touched each of us who had the privilege of working with her.
When the first CNFA medical team visited Kenya in 2009, it quickly became apparent that Sarah was integral to forming a partnership with our Kenyan nursing colleagues. She was always keen to help us understand the best ways to set up clinics in small rural towns, manage patient flow, and, most importantly, respect local practices.Sarah contributed to every mission from 2009 to 2025. She provided essential language interpretation, offered invaluable insight into culturally appropriate care, and taught us about medical norms in Kenya. Her knowledge, professionalism, and warm welcome to each and every one of us were indispensable to our work. She played a key leadership role in supporting sexual health education for middle school students, bringing compassion, sensitivity, and understanding to an important part of our outreach. She consistently held herself to high standards, striving to provide high levels nursing of care while demonstrating a deep and genuine commitment to the well-being of her fellow Kenyans. She fully embodied the true spirit of being a nurse.
Sarah was a gentle and kind soul with a warm sense of humour that endeared her to all of us. Over the years, she formed close and lasting friendships with Canadian nurses. Sarah often took younger nurses under her wing, ensuring they were safe and comfortable, and keeping in touch with them long after the missions ended.
Sarah's passing is a tragic loss, not only for her family and community but also for all of us at CNFA. She leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and dedication that will never be forgotten. As Sarah and many Kenyans are people of faith, we take comfort in the belief that she is resting in God's care. We offer our sincerest condolences, prayers and love to all who knew her.
