Paramedic Services Week 2026 in York Region and across Canada is coming to a close. This year's theme, Better Care Starts Here, recognizes the dedication, skill, compassion, and teamwork that defines the qualities Canadian paramedics exhibit every day in providing care to our communities. CUPE 4900 is proud to represent the paramedics who care for over 1.2 million residents across York Region.

Better Care Starts Here also means recognizing that the health and wellbeing of frontline workers is directly connected to the care they provide their communities. Every day, paramedics face intense physical demands, traumatic incidents, and high-pressure environments that can take a lasting toll on both mental and physical health. Supporting safer workplaces, adequate staffing, mental health resources, injury prevention, and respectful return-to-work practices ensures paramedics can continue providing compassionate, high-quality care. CUPE 4900 steadfastly supports and will always advocate that better care starts with caring for the workers who are there for people on their worst days.

On April 28th, CUPE members gather across Canada to honour our workers who lost their lives at work and to inspire members to keep fighting for safer workplaces.

We remember:

Nabil El-Ahmed, CUPE 5167, Ontario
Kulbir Kalia, CUPE 3338, British Columbia
Jose Castillo, CUPE 416, Ontario
Richard Anstett, CUPE 79, Ontario
Neil Harris, CUPE 54, Ontario

In 2026, CUPE and CUPE 4900 is dedicating the year to health and safety, with a focus on strengthening our committees that play a vital role in identifying hazards, preventing injuries, and saving lives.

We encourage our members to support one another, engage in worker participation, and take action to improve health and safety in every workplace across York Region.

Your pension at risk: $142.4 billion money grab, affecting almost 650,000 workers.

The Ford government has taken over OMERS by granting the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing direct control over your pension fund, contrary to recommendations made by their own experts in a recent review.

This has been tried before. It didn’t work then, and it won’t now.

No other jointly sponsored pension plan in Canada is subject to this level of political interference.

This is a BIG deal, and we need your help to stop it. If you care about your retirement, please add your voice to this petition.

Passionate, Experienced, Motivated! Our newly elected Vice President and Injured Worker Representative both share impressive pedigrees with extensive backgrounds in leadership and advocacy. Their voices will add new diverse skills to CUPE 4900's Executive and strengthen our Local's resolve to demand fair and equitable treatment for all workers.

Cliff has served York Region diligently as a front-line paramedic for over 19 years. Beyond his dedication to Public Service, he brings an extensive background in leadership roles as a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran with over 10 years of service and having held the positions of President and Treasurer in the Bradford Board of Trade. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his two teenage children and his wife, along with helping her run a successful small business. As a Union Steward, Trustee, and founding member of the Mobilization Committee, Cliff is honoured to now be elected Vice President and looks forward to working with members in building a stronger, engaged, and more united than ever CUPE Local 4900.

Christina is a paramedic and steward for CUPE Local 4900, specializing in WSIB cases and injured worker representation. With a background in healthcare leadership at Diabetes Canada, wedding planning, and tech entrepreneurship, she brings diverse experience to her advocacy work. A dedicated pet mom who champions dogs and the underdog, Christina is committed to supporting members through their recovery and return-to-work processes.

Congratulations to both of our newly elected Executives, and Thank You for volunteering to serve in these essential roles!
