August 19 is World Humanitarian Day. As the humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, ADRA recognizes and celebrates the vital contributions of our workers and volunteers across the ADRA network and of our peers across the humanitarian sector.

We also solemnly recognize the challenges that face humanitarian workers. This kind of work brings people face-to-face with the unthinkable. The desire to serve humanity, to show compassion in crisis, and to walk alongside communities in recovery comes with both risks and rewards, victories and sacrifices. Various members of our own ADRA staff have lived through dangerous situations, all in the name of Justice, Compassion, and Love for other human beings.

Today, ADRA honours the front-line health and aid personnel worldwide who provide life-saving support in dire situations. We also insist on the importance of improving infrastructure for civilians and humanitarian staff in conflict zones. Those who choose to help should not themselves need rescue. May we live to see a world where helpers are not harmed.
